Actors Union Contemplates "Final" Offer from Hollywood Studios

20:05 04.11.2023

In a continued effort to resolve the ongoing strike that has brought the Hollywood film and scripted television production to a standstill for the past 114 days, negotiators for actors and major Hollywood studios met on Saturday. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), representing the studios, presented an offer to the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) during the session.

The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee released a statement saying, "We received an offer today from the AMPTP, which they characterized as their \'Last, Best, and Final Offer.\' We are reviewing it and considering our response within the context of the critical issues addressed in our proposals." The details of the offer were not immediately disclosed.

One of the key issues in the negotiations is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate actors\' likenesses and performances. SAG-AFTRA is seeking limitations on this practice, while the AMPTP argues for informed consent and fair pay when performers are digitally replicated.

The strike has had severe consequences for the entertainment industry, with the studios warning that unless a deal is reached this week, it will be impossible to salvage half a season of scripted television. Furthermore, the 2024 summer movie season is increasingly at risk, as more films are being delayed to 2025.

Aside from AI concerns, the union has also been pushing for general wage increases, higher compensation for successful streaming programs, and improvements in health and retirement benefits.

Saturday\'s negotiation session was attended by leaders from major studios and streaming services, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter. The strike has now become the longest TV/film work stoppage in the union\'s history.

The impact of the strike on the California economy has been significant, with estimates suggesting a loss of at least $6 billion, according to the Milken Institute. Most scripted film and television production remains on hold, exacerbating the economic toll on the industry.

While both sides remain engaged in negotiations, the outcome of the latest offer from the AMPTP and the subsequent response from SAG-AFTRA will determine the future of the strike and the fate of the entertainment industry.
