Peloton Instructor Critiques "Tenet" in Front of Director Christopher Nolan

13:19 05.01.2024

In a surprising turn of events, Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman found herself in the spotlight after airing her grievances about Christopher Nolan's film Tenet during one of her virtual workout classes. Little did she know that the acclaimed director himself was taking that very class. Sherman played a song from Tenet and asked her viewers if they had seen the movie, expressing her frustration and confusion about its plot. "Did anybody see this besides me? Because I need a manual. Someone's got to explain this. I'm not kidding," she ranted.

Christopher Nolan, known for his critically acclaimed films such as "Memento," "Inception," and "Dunkirk," was in attendance during Sherman's class and overheard her comments about his film. However, the revelation only came to light recently when Nolan mentioned the incident while accepting the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best director for his latest film, "Oppenheimer." Recounting the moment, Nolan joked about the harsh criticism he received during his Peloton workout, comparing it to renowned film critic Rex Reed's scathing reviews.

Nolan's remark made headlines, and Sherman soon realized that he was referring to her. Taking to Instagram, she issued an apology for her rant in 2020. Expressing her excitement that the acclaimed filmmaker knew who she was, she admitted to her tendency to speak her mind and explained that her comments were merely a random remark about a movie she had seen. She also took the opportunity to invite Nolan to join her for a Peloton class, promising an insult-free experience.

During his acceptance speech, Nolan also touched on the democratization of film criticism in today's world, emphasizing the importance of professional critics who strive for objectivity. He praised the critical appreciation of films, acknowledging its value to filmmakers and the filmmaking community.

Despite the criticism he faced during Sherman's Peloton class, Nolan's latest film, "Oppenheimer," has been well-received. With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the biopic about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer has garnered praise for its moral complexity, informative storytelling, and stunning visuals. The film is nominated for eight Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture - Drama, and is expected to receive multiple Oscar nominations later this month.

While Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" took home the New York Film Critics Circle's award for Best Picture, Nolan's success with Oppenheimer continues to solidify his reputation as one of the leading filmmakers of the 21st century.
