Child discovered trapped in concealed closet, leading to man's arrest in Arkansas

06:03 08.11.2023

A shocking incident unfolded in Tontitown, Arkansas, as a man was arrested after police discovered his child hidden in a closet that had been forcibly nailed shut. Jon Thompson, 40, was taken into custody on November 3rd, following the shocking discovery of his child concealed within the compartment, which was covered with clothes and boxes. An initial incident report revealed that Thompson had allegedly hidden the child in an attempt to evade Arkansas Department of Human Services' efforts to take custody of the youngster.

The child, believed to be around five years old, was found in a perilous situation, raising concerns about their well-being. Thompson now faces a series of serious charges, including endangering the welfare of a minor, first-degree false imprisonment, interference with custody, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of body armor. The Washington County prosecuting attorney's office has confirmed the charges against Thompson but stated that he has not yet been formally charged.

Footage from the body cameras worn by Tontitown Police officers has shed light on the disturbing incident. In the chilling 22-second video, a man can be seen meticulously parting clothes, moving boxes, and searching the back of the closet. A voice off-camera can be heard softly saying, "baby, baby," before the man appears to open the concealed compartment and the child is brought out. Another voice is heard saying, "hey, sweetie," indicating the presence of law enforcement authorities.

According to the incident report, the compartment within the closet was deliberately hidden and secured with nails. In a disturbing turn of events, officers were initially denied access to the property, with Thompson reportedly producing documents that seemingly indicated he had been awarded custody of the child in October. However, the police report suggests that documents proving the state's granted custody were later presented to the father.

While the motive behind Thompson's actions remains unclear, the charges brought against him paint a troubling picture. The severity of the allegations, coupled with the harrowing nature of the discovery, has left the community in shock. Thompson's attorney could not be reached for comment, leaving many questions unanswered. However, a representative from the prosecutor's office confirmed that Thompson was granted a $5,000 bond, which was posted on Sunday. He is scheduled for arraignment on December 4th.

The incident has raised concerns about the child's safety and the circumstances that led to the state being granted custody. The Arkansas Department of Human Services, responsible for overseeing the Division of Children and Family Services, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. As the case unfolds, the community waits for answers and hopes for justice to be served for the innocent child caught in the middle of this distressing situation.
