Tragic Storm Accident Claims 3 Lives, Injures Baby in Portland, Oregon

11:24 20.01.2024

In a chilling turn of events following a dangerous storm that had enveloped Portland, Oregon in ice, a horrifying incident unfolded that left three people dead. Majiah Washington, a resident of the city, became a witness to the tragedy that unfolded right outside her home.

It was after the storm had subsided that Washington noticed a flash of light outside her window. Curiosity piqued, she opened her blinds only to be confronted with a scene of sheer terror. A red SUV, battered by the storm, lay helplessly with a downed power line resting on top of it. Panic ensued as Washington's neighbor's pregnant daughter, a mere 21 years old, screamed for her boyfriend to move their baby away from the dangerous situation.

In a desperate attempt to protect their child, the boyfriend valiantly braved the treacherous icy driveway. However, fate had other plans. Midway through his journey, he lost his footing and slid backward, inadvertently coming into contact with the live wire. Washington vividly recalls the horrifying sight, recounting how "a little fire, then smoke" erupted from the area where he had touched the wire.

Tragically, the pregnant mother, determined to save her child, also slipped on the icy ground and was electrocuted. The harrowing scene further unfolded as her 15-year-old brother rushed outside to offer his assistance, only to meet the same fate.

Amidst the chaos, Washington, an 18-year-old girl, sprang into action. She immediately dialed 911 and remained on the line with the dispatcher as the events unfolded before her eyes. In a stroke of luck, she noticed the 9-month-old baby, lying on top of his deceased father, moving his head. Fueled by determination, Washington ventured outside, cautiously maneuvering to avoid the live wire that had claimed three lives just moments ago.

With unwavering bravery, Washington managed to reach the baby unscathed, even as she inadvertently touched the father's lifeless body. "I was concerned about the baby," she explained, emphasizing her singular focus on saving the innocent child. The fact that she and the baby had not been electrocuted left many puzzled, including Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Rick Graves.

Graves commended Washington for her heroic actions, acknowledging that it was her quick thinking that saved the baby's life. However, he openly admitted that he couldn't comprehend why she and the child had escaped unharmed by the deadly electric current. "We do have fortunately with us a toddler that is going to be able to thrive and do what they possibly can as they move forward," Graves stated. "And they are here, in part, because of the heroic acts of a member of our community."

The tragedy that unfolded outside Washington's home was just one of several incidents caused by the severe weather conditions that had gripped the Pacific Northwest. The storm, characterized by heavy snowfall, freezing rain, ice, and frigid temperatures, has claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals in Oregon alone. The causes of death range from hypothermia to falling trees or utility poles. In the Seattle area, an additional five deaths have been attributed to hypothermia.

As the community mourns the loss of three lives, they also celebrate the presence of a resilient baby, whose survival is owed to the selfless actions of a courageous young woman. Majiah Washington's bravery will forever be etched in the annals of Portland's history, reminding us all of the indomitable spirit that can emerge even in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
