Arrest Made in California Trash Bin Torso Case

22:46 09.11.2023

In a shocking turn of events, a Los Angeles man has been arrested and charged with murder after the dismembered torso of a woman was discovered in a dumpster on Wednesday morning. The local authorities have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Samuel Haskell, who was taken into custody approximately four hours after the gruesome finding, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department.

During a press conference, Detective Efren Gutierrez revealed that investigators believe the dismembered torso may belong to Haskell's wife, Mei Haskell, who is currently reported as missing. Gutierrez suggested that the act of dismembering the body was an attempt by the murder suspect to delay identification. He further added that Mei's parents, Yanxiang Wang and Gaoshen Li, who resided with the couple and their three children in Tarzana, California, are also missing. "They would normally be home in these hours, and attempts have been made to contact them by phone, by cellphone and no answer. And the same with Mei. She is unaccounted for," Gutierrez expressed.

Fortunately, the children, all of elementary-school age, have been located safely at school and are currently under the care of the authorities. However, concerns continue to mount as police investigate the mysterious disappearances of Mei Haskell and her parents. KTLA reports that on Tuesday night, an individual reported witnessing body parts in bags near the Haskell home. However, upon police arrival at the scene, the bags had vanished. The following morning around 6:15 a.m., a homeless man sifting through a commercial building's trash for recyclables made the grisly discovery of the dismembered torso and promptly alerted emergency services.

Surveillance footage from the area directed the police back to the Haskell residence, where they uncovered bloodstains and additional evidence. Haskell, now in police custody, is currently being held on a $2 million bail. Interestingly, it has been revealed that Haskell is the son of Sam Haskell Sr., a prominent Hollywood agent who represented numerous A-list celebrities such as Dolly Parton, Whoopi Goldberg, and George Clooney, among others. Sam Haskell Sr. retired from his agent career in 2005 and currently serves as the president of Magnolia Hill Productions, a company renowned for producing Dolly Parton's specials, including "Dolly Parton's Magic Mountain Christmas," as reported by TMZ.

In relation to the case, police have arrested a suspect after discovering partial remains of a woman in a trash bin in Encino, Los Angeles. The victim's torso, wrapped in plastic, was uncovered in the parking lot of a commercial property at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday. The alarming find was made by a local man who was searching for recyclable materials within the dumpster. Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest of 35-year-old Sam Haskell on suspicion of murder after locating him at a mall in Topanga on the same day.

Given the extent of the dismemberment, the police have stated that formal identification of the body is currently not possible. However, they have reported that three individuals who resided with Haskell at a house in the nearby Tarzana neighborhood are currently missing. These individuals include his wife, Mei Haskell, her 72-year-old father Gaoshan Li, and her 64-year-old mother YanXiang Wang, as detailed by NBC Los Angeles. Fortunately, the three elementary school-aged children who also lived at the address were found unharmed at their school and have been placed in the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

During a news conference, LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez provided further insight into the investigation. "When the officers responded, they discovered a dismembered female wrapped in a plastic bag. It was just outside the dumpster, they confirmed that it was human remains," Gutierrez revealed. He also mentioned that video evidence collected from the scene led the authorities to the Haskell residence, where further investigation took place.

Prior to the discovery of the dismembered torso, the police received a call at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday regarding a suspicious bag that potentially contained human remains in Tarzana. However, upon arrival, the officers found no evidence to justify entry into the house, as stated by Gutierrez. NBC Los Angeles also reported that Gaoshan Li, Mei's father, was known to drive a white Volkswagen Tiguan, which would typically be parked on the street but is currently missing.

As the investigation unfolds, the Los Angeles community remains in shock over the heinous crime and hopes for answers to the whereabouts of Mei Haskell and her parents. The authorities are determined to bring justice to the victim and her family while piecing together the puzzle surrounding this disturbing case.
