Drought-induced phenomenon: Hawaiian pond startlingly pink, raising concerns

09:11 11.11.2023

Fascinated visitors are flocking to the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui, Hawaii, as a mysterious phenomenon has turned the pond a bright pink color. Images of the pink water first appeared on social media, drawing the attention of curious onlookers. Volunteers at the refuge, some of whom have been around the water for 70 years, have expressed their astonishment, claiming they have never seen anything like it before.

Bret Wolfe, the refuge manager, recounted how he was alerted to the strange occurrence by a beachgoer who said, "There's something weird going on over here." Although the pink hue may appear fun, officials are concerned about the cause behind this phenomenon. The island of Maui has been facing a prolonged drought, which scientists believe might be responsible for the pink transformation.

Initially, toxic algae was suspected as the cause, but lab tests ruled it out as the reason for the color change. Instead, scientists have turned their attention to a type of organism called halobacteria. Halobacteria are a single-celled organism, or archaea, that thrive in bodies of water with high salt levels. Currently, the Kealia Pond outlet area has twice the salinity of seawater due to the low water levels caused by the drought.

Mr. Wolfe mentioned that the pond has experienced periods of drought and high salinity in the past, making it a mystery why the color has changed now. To confirm the source of the transformation, DNA analysis still needs to be conducted. However, until further investigation is completed, visitors are being warned to refrain from entering the water or consuming any fish caught in the pond.

The pink pond has become a popular attraction, with fascinated visitors flocking to witness the unusual spectacle. The refuge has seen an influx of people eager to see the vibrant pink water, leaving volunteers amazed by the sudden surge of interest. The refuge manager, Bret Wolfe, described the sheer number of visitors as unprecedented, stating that he has never seen such fascination before in his 70 years of experience.

The drought conditions in Maui have undoubtedly contributed to the pink pond phenomenon. With water levels at an all-time low, the salinity in the Kealia Pond outlet area has risen significantly. This increased salinity has provided an ideal environment for halobacteria, causing them to thrive and potentially resulting in the pink coloration.

Scientists have been monitoring the situation closely since October 30, when the color change was first observed. While toxic algae was initially suspected, subsequent lab tests ruled it out. The attention has now shifted to halobacteria as the possible culprit. These single-celled organisms are known to flourish in high-salt environments. With the salinity in the pond currently twice that of seawater, it is a prime habitat for these microorganisms.

Despite previous instances of drought and high salinity in the pond, officials remain puzzled as to why the color change has occurred this time. DNA analysis is required to definitively identify the source of the transformation. Until then, precautions are being taken to ensure visitor safety. The public is being warned not to enter the water or consume any fish caught in the pond while investigations are underway.

As the investigation continues, scientists and officials hope to shed light on this captivating and concerning occurrence. The pink pond has captivated both locals and tourists alike, reminding us of the mysteries nature still holds and the importance of preserving and studying our ecosystems.
