U.S. military aircraft crashes in Mediterranean during training, no signs of hostility

19:30 11.11.2023

In a tragic incident, an American military aircraft crashed on Friday night in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during a training operation, according to the U.S. European Command (EUCOM). The aircraft, details of which have not been disclosed, experienced a mishap and went down, as confirmed by EUCOM in a press release.

EUCOM, responsible for U.S. military operations across Europe, portions of Asia and the Middle East, the Arctic, and Atlantic Ocean, clarified that the mishap was solely related to the training exercises and that there were no indications of hostile activity. However, it is yet to be determined which service branch the personnel involved belonged to. The organization chose not to release additional information about the crew or the number of individuals on board, out of respect for the affected families.

The cause of the training incident is currently under investigation, as stated by EUCOM. Both EUCOM and the Department of Defense declined to provide any further comments to Fox News Digital. The Pentagon also acknowledged the crash, revealing that it occurred during a training operation in the Eastern Mediterranean, but refrained from providing any additional details regarding the type of aircraft, branch affiliation, specific location, timing, or casualties.

This incident takes place against the backdrop of recent developments in the region. In response to the attack by Hamas militants on Israel on October 7, the U.S. has deployed forces to the Middle East. The USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group were sent to the Eastern Mediterranean immediately after the attack, while the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its strike group were deployed to the Persian Gulf due to the increased attacks by Iran-backed Shia militia groups on U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria. Additionally, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has sent additional air defense systems to the region.

The crash of the American military aircraft raises concerns about the safety and effectiveness of training operations, especially in such volatile regions. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that a thorough analysis will shed light on the causes behind this devastating incident and help prevent similar mishaps in the future.
