US retaliates, strikes Iran-linked facility after ongoing attacks

19:56 12.11.2023

The United States has carried out yet another round of strikes against Iran-linked sites in Syria, marking the third time in less than three weeks that the U.S. military has targeted locations in the country. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the strikes, stating that they were in response to attacks on American personnel. The U.S. military conducted precision strikes on facilities in eastern Syria that were used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran-affiliated groups. Specifically, the strikes targeted a training facility and a safe house near the cities of Albu Kamal and Mayadeen.

This recent series of strikes follows previous attacks on Tehran-linked sites in Syria. On October 26, the United States hit two facilities that were said to be used by Iran and its affiliated organizations. Additionally, a Tehran-linked weapons storage site in Syria was targeted on Wednesday. The U.S. government has attributed these strikes to the rise in attacks on American forces in Iraq and Syria, with over 45 attacks occurring since October 17, resulting in numerous injuries to U.S. personnel.

The surge in attacks on U.S. troops has been linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The war began when Hamas initiated a cross-border attack from Gaza on October 7, resulting in Israeli military retaliation. The Israeli response, characterized as a relentless air, land, and naval assault on Gaza, has led to widespread anger in the Middle East and criticism against Washington from Iran-backed groups. It is evident that these attacks on American forces are a direct consequence of the escalating tensions in the region.

The United States currently has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and around 900 in Syria, with the aim of preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State group. These troops have been supporting local ground forces in their efforts to push back the militant group, which once held significant territory in both countries. However, the recent attacks on U.S. personnel have underscored the ongoing security challenges in the region.

In response to the strikes, Defense Secretary Austin stated that the United States is fully prepared to take further necessary measures to protect its people and facilities. At the same time, he urged against any escalation of hostilities. The situation remains tense, and it is unclear how Iran and its affiliated groups will respond to these latest actions by the United States. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments in the region as tensions continue to rise.
