10-Week Survival: Loyal Dog Found with Deceased Hiker in Colorado Mountains

07:38 15.11.2023

In a remarkable story of survival and loyalty, a tiny Jack Russell terrier named Finney has been found alive in the Colorado mountains more than 10 weeks after her owner, Richard Moore, died of hypothermia. The pair had set out on a hike to Blackhead Peak on August 19, but never returned home. Despite extensive search efforts, they remained missing until a local hunter stumbled upon Mr. Moore's body on October 30. Astonishingly, Finney was still faithfully by her owner's side, despite having lost half her body weight.

Rescue teams had combed the treacherous and steep mountainous terrain between the peak and where Mr. Moore's car was parked, but their efforts had been in vain. Delinda VanneBrightyn, a member of Taos Search and Rescue (TSAR), revealed that her own dog had been involved in the initial search, as they were dropped on the mountain by helicopter due to its steepness. It was VanneBrightyn who made the harrowing discovery of Mr. Moore's body, 2.5 miles east of the mountain-top beneath where they were inserted.

When Finney was found, she was remarkably still alive, having managed to survive on her own for more than two months. VanneBrightyn speculated that the small terrier likely survived by hunting small animals such as mice, while carefully avoiding predators like mountain lions, coyotes, and bears. "If that dog could talk, it would be an amazing story," she remarked. "We probably could not even believe the story the dog would tell."

After the recovery of Mr. Moore's body, a rescue crew was flown in the next day. Finney was immediately taken to a veterinarian for a check-up and treatment. Fortunately, despite her ordeal, the resilient terrier was in relatively good health. She has since been reunited with Mr. Moore's family, providing them with some solace during this difficult time. "They have lost their loved one, but they still have this wonderful, loyal dog," said VanneBrightyn.

Finney's incredible story of survival has captivated many, with VanneBrightyn describing it as a "magnificent story" that showcases the Jack Russell terrier's fierce loyalty and dedication. These tough little dogs are known for their determination, and Finney's ability to endure and stay with her owner until the very end is a testament to their unyielding spirit.

The tragic cause of Mr. Moore's death was determined to be hypothermia, a condition that can cause disorientation and confusion. The hike to Blackhead Peak, known for its challenging elevation gain of 2,150 feet, can be treacherous and unforgiving. However, Mr. Moore, an experienced hiker, had likely encountered unforeseen circumstances that led to his untimely demise.

While the search for Mr. Moore and Finney may have ended in tragedy, the discovery of Finney alive has brought some closure to the family. TSAR expressed their condolences while also expressing their relief that Finney was able to make it back home. This incredible tale of resilience serves as a reminder of the unwavering bond between humans and their beloved pets.
