Texas hiker found alive after disappearing in Big Bend National Park

17:57 17.11.2023

After more than a week of searching, a missing hiker was found alive in Big Bend National Park in Texas. The National Park Service announced on Friday that their search and rescue operation had been successful. The hiker, identified as Christy Perry, a 25-year-old woman from Houston, had been missing since November 9th. She was found by the highly skilled park team, in collaboration with outside law enforcement, and was safely rescued.

Perry was immediately transported to a hospital in Odessa, Texas, where she is currently receiving medical care. When she was discovered on Friday morning, she was awake and able to communicate. The National Park Service did not provide any further details about her condition.

The search for Perry began after her family reported her missing when she failed to return home from her trip to Big Bend National Park. She had picked up a rental car in Midland, Texas, and arrived at the park on November 9th. However, she did not make it to her camping reservation at the Chisos Basin Campground that night. The rental car was later found at the trailhead of the Lost Mine Trail.

Park Rangers and U.S. Border Patrol Agents started searching for Perry on Wednesday. The Lost Mine Trail, a popular hiking trail that stretches 4.8 miles round trip, was closed on Thursday to give the search teams space to look for the missing hiker. The search continued into Friday morning, when Perry was located approximately 1/4 mile below the summit of the Lost Mine Trail.

Big Bend National Park, located in southwestern Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border, covers around 800,000 acres and spans over 1,250 square miles. The park is known for its diverse landscapes, including desert and grassland areas, as well as the Rio Grande and the Chisos Mountains. It shares 118 miles of border with Mexico.

The National Park Service has issued a flyer with Perry's description, stating that she is a Korean woman with brown hair and brown eyes, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs about 100 pounds. They are asking anyone who may have seen her while hiking the Lost Mine Trail on November 8th or 9th to contact them with any information.

The search efforts for Perry have involved various agencies, including Border Patrol Agents, Texas Game Wardens, local fire crews, and helicopters from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Border Patrol. The park has emphasized the importance of information from other hikers and backpackers, as it can be invaluable in locating missing individuals in such remote areas.
