Iowa high school principal tried to 'distract' shooter so students could flee, daughter says

13:18 05.01.2024

In a tragic incident at Perry High School in Iowa, a teenage shooter opened fire, killing one student and injuring five others. The shooting took place early in the morning before most students had arrived at the school. Authorities received reports of the shooting at 7:37 a.m. and quickly responded to the scene within seven minutes. Upon arrival, they found students and faculty taking shelter or fleeing the building.

The shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and investigators are continuing their search for answers. Meanwhile, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.

Among the injured was Perry High School principal, Dan Marburger, who reportedly tried to calm down the shooter and distract him to allow students to escape. Marburger's daughter, Claire Marburger, took to social media to share her father's heroic actions. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she described her father as a "gentle giant" and an "amazing person" who would always put himself in harm's way for the benefit of his students and staff. She revealed that he had undergone surgery and was in stable condition.

Claire Marburger expressed her father's devastation over the incident and his concern for the victims, the community, and the negative memories associated with the school. She requested that people share positive memories about the school and extend their well-wishes to the other victims' families. She also urged people to show grace to the family of the shooter, acknowledging that they too are facing a difficult time.

The shooting occurred on the first day back to school after the winter break. Although there were not many students on campus at the time, a breakfast program was taking place. Witnesses recounted the terrifying moments as gunfire erupted, with students running for their lives and seeking shelter wherever they could find it. One student described hiding in a small room with three other students and a counselor.

Law enforcement officials recovered a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun from the shooter. They also discovered an improvised explosive device, which was safely rendered inert by the state fire marshal and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Dan Marburger has been a dedicated educator at Perry schools for over 20 years. Throughout his career, he has played a crucial role in helping students cope with tragic accidents and losses. In previous incidents, he has provided support and counseling to students and staff, demonstrating his commitment to the well-being of the school community.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the Perry community is left to mourn the loss of a young life and support those affected by this devastating event. The school district and local authorities are working together to provide resources and assistance to students and staff as they navigate the trauma and grief caused by this tragedy.
