Adult film star Ron Jeremy released to "private residence" in rape case due to declining health

Former porn star Ron Jeremy, who has been accused of sexually assaulting multiple women, has been granted release from jail to a "private residence" due to his worsening health. The 70-year-old's request was approved by a California judge after it was discovered that no medical facility would take him. According to an email obtained by the Los Angeles Times, Jeremy's health had deteriorated to the point where he is essentially bedridden, leading to the need for round-the-clock medical care. Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson shared the email with Jeremy's victims, expressing his dismay over the situation and apologizing for not being able to achieve complete justice in court.

The location of the "private residence" where Jeremy will be placed is still unknown, according to his attorney. Concerns about Jeremy's health first arose when his defense attorney, Stu Goldfarb, informed the court that his client did not recognize him. Goldfarb raised the question of what to do with someone who is not competent to stand trial but is charged with a serious felony. He emphasized the importance of protecting both the public and Jeremy's civil rights, suggesting that a secure facility would be the best option.

Jeremy has been in jail since his arrest in 2020 after four women accused him of sexually assaulting them in bars along the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Following this, numerous other women came forward with allegations of groping and rape spanning decades. One of the allegations even involved a lewd act against a 15-year-old at a party in Santa Clarita. In total, Jeremy faced 34 criminal counts based on the accusations of 23 different women, with the oldest incident dating back to 1996. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 51, and many claimed that Jeremy lured them into small spaces, often the bathroom of a West Hollywood bar, before assaulting them.

The Rainbow Room Bar & Grill, where Jeremy was alleged to have committed many of the assaults, is currently facing negligence lawsuits from several women. The accusations against Jeremy prompted his arrest in 2020, and he has remained in jail since then. In February, he was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial and was committed to a state mental hospital in California.

Ron Jeremy's attorney, Stu Goldfarb, maintained his client's innocence, stating that he believed Jeremy would have been found innocent if the case had gone to trial. Goldfarb expressed disappointment that Jeremy would not have the opportunity to clear his name due to his mental condition. Jeremy himself has denied all wrongdoing.

Earlier this year, Jeremy was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial by a Los Angeles judge after reports from both prosecutors and his defense indicated that he was in a state of incurable neurocognitive decline. He was indicted on 34 counts of sexual assault, including 12 counts of rape, involving 21 women over a span of more than two decades. Despite pleading not guilty, Jeremy will not face trial and will instead be managed through state mental facilities.

The alleged victims, as revealed in transcripts of grand jury testimony obtained by The Associated Press, described Jeremy luring them into secluded spaces, often the bathroom of a West Hollywood bar and grill, where he would trap and sexually assault them. The release of Jeremy to a private residence has raised concerns about the potential for assault on caregivers, although the judge ruled that the public guardian would be responsible for ensuring the safety of those providing care, even suggesting the hiring of male caregivers.

Overall, the release of Ron Jeremy to a private residence due to his deteriorating health has left the victims disappointed and without the opportunity for complete justice in court. The case highlights the complexity of handling individuals who are not mentally competent to stand trial but are charged with serious crimes, raising questions about public safety and the protection of their civil rights.
