Arizona Street Preacher Praying for Survival After Headshot Attack

Religious Leader Shot in Head While Preaching on Street Corner in Glendale, Arizona

26-year-old Hans Schmidt, a military medic and devoted Christian father of two, is fighting for his life after being shot in the head while preaching on a street corner in Glendale. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of 51st Avenue and Peoria, according to local authorities.

Schmidt, who had recently relocated to Arizona, was enthusiastically sharing the gospel and promoting an upcoming church service when tragedy struck. Gina Winn of the Glendale Police Department described the incident as a "horrible, horrible event" and expressed concern for Schmidt's critical condition. Schmidt's family and the Victory Chapel, where he served as the outreach director, asked for continued prayers and provided an update on his condition, stating that they are encouraged by his progress.

Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the shooting and are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify the perpetrator. It remains uncertain whether Schmidt was specifically targeted or if the attack was a random act of violence. Winn emphasized the importance of potential witnesses coming forward, stating, "We believe there is someone in the Valley who knows what happened. If you saw an individual or vehicle, you're asked to call the Glendale Police Department."

Eyewitness accounts from those who worked in the vicinity of the incident shed light on the hostility Schmidt faced while preaching. Paul Sanchez, who works nearby, revealed that passersby would often hurl insults and derogatory remarks at Schmidt. Another individual, the owner of Jesse James Comics, expressed disbelief at the escalation of events. He recalled being asked to move his vehicle by the police following the shooting and that the traffic patterns had been altered due to the investigation. The owner, known as James, admitted that he had previously worried about Schmidt's safety while preaching on the busy street corner.

In light of the shooting, James emphasized the need for increased vigilance and security measures in the area. He stated, "After tonight, I think we just need to take those extra steps. Closing at the right time, making sure at nighttime we have extra people on the floor, just being aware of our surroundings a little bit more."

Glendale Police Department confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. However, they released a statement urging potential witnesses to come forward, as detectives believe there are additional individuals who may have information about the incident. "It is imperative that the public reach out if you do have information, so we can bring justice to Hans and his family," Winn emphasized.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. Spanish speakers can call 480-TESTIGO.
