St. John's Defense Impresses, Alleyne Shines in Win over Utah

04:37 20.11.2023

In a stunning display of teamwork and resilience, the St. John's basketball team emerged victorious against Utah in the third-place game of the Charleston Classic. Led by their new coach, Rick Pitino, the Johnnies showcased their potential as they played like a cohesive unit rather than a group of individuals.

The game began with Nahiem Alleyne making a significant impact off the bench. The fifth-year senior, who had previously apologized to Pitino for not meeting his own standards, demonstrated his value on both ends of the court. Alleyne scored 10 points on efficient shooting, dished out three assists, and earned a plus-nine rating in just 17 minutes of play. Pitino had praised Alleyne's defensive abilities, and the swingman proved himself by effectively guarding the opposition. Additionally, Alleyne showcased his versatility by knocking down a few three-pointers and setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities.

Pitino had also expressed his desire for his players to contribute in multiple ways rather than solely focusing on scoring. And the team responded accordingly. RJ Luis, who was still recovering from a hand injury, informed Pitino that he was not yet ready to return to the court. Pitino commended the performance of star center Joel Soriano, who displayed intelligence and discipline in his play, tallying 12 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks against Utah's towering frontcourt.

The Johnnies' victory was a much-needed morale boost after running out of gas in their previous game against Dayton. This time, they demonstrated their ability to maintain their energy and finishing power throughout the game. In the second half, St. John's employed a suffocating defense, limiting Utah's three-point shooting and outrebounding their larger opponents by 10. This defensive prowess, combined with balanced scoring and excellent ball movement, allowed the Johnnies to pull away and secure a 91-82 victory.

Four different players contributed to a crucial 16-5 run that sealed the game for St. John's. Daniss Jenkins led the team with 19 points and eight assists, while Jordan Dingle and Chris Ledlum added 18 and 15 points, respectively. Soriano's dominant performance on the boards further solidified the Johnnies' control over the game.

The victory signaled a turning point for St. John's. Despite faltering in the second half, they demonstrated resilience, fought back, and ultimately prevailed. The team's athleticism, shooting prowess, and ability to outperform their opponents on the glass were all on display. Pitino's coaching and emphasis on teamwork seemed to have a positive effect on the team's performance.

As the Johnnies celebrated their triumph, chants of "Let's go Johnnies" filled the arena. It was a moment of validation for a team that had faced doubts and setbacks early in the season. With this win, the St. John's basketball team showcased their true potential and proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Big East conference.
