Jon Lovitz slams Colbert and Kimmel for pushing 'political agenda'

00:31 22.11.2023

Actor and comedian Jon Lovitz recently criticized the politicization of late-night comedy during an exclusive interview with FOX News Digital. Lovitz, who rose to fame during his time on "Saturday Night Live," expressed his disapproval of how late-night shows have become increasingly polarizing since the Trump era. He specifically called out liberal hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers for prioritizing politics over comedy.

Lovitz reminisced about the days when late-night shows were primarily focused on entertainment rather than political commentary. He mentioned that legendary host Johnny Carson would make a few jokes about the president or current events, but it wasn't the central theme of the show. Lovitz personally knows Colbert, Kimmel, and Meyers and acknowledged their talent and humor but expressed his disappointment in their one-sided political approach.

He then compared the present-day talk show format to his appearances on David Letterman's Late Show during the Letterman era. Lovitz described those appearances as true comedy shows, with interviews being more structured routines to highlight the guests. He contrasted this with the current late-night landscape, where politics dominates the content.

Although Lovitz appreciates that hosts have the freedom to shape their shows as they wish, he admitted that he does not enjoy the current political focus. He mentioned that he no longer watches these shows, except for Jimmy Fallon, who has managed to maintain a more lighthearted and nonpartisan approach. Lovitz criticized the backlash Fallon faced after his friendly interview with then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, calling it a mistake. Fallon subsequently apologized for humanizing Trump and potentially influencing the election.

While Fallon has remained apolitical, his colleagues Colbert and Kimmel have made politics a cornerstone of their programs. Lovitz described their shows as hammering political content, openly displaying their political agendas. This shift away from comedy and towards politics disappoints Lovitz, who longs for the days of comedians, stand-up routines, and bits, reminiscent of Letterman's era.

Aside from his time on "SNL," Lovitz has had a successful career in films such as "A League of Their Own" and "Rat Race." He has also appeared in numerous Adam Sandler comedies and regularly performs stand-up comedy across the country. In January, Lovitz impersonated scandal-plagued Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., during an appearance on "The Tonight Show."

Overall, Lovitz's comments highlight his dissatisfaction with the current state of late-night comedy, which he believes has deviated from its comedic roots and become overly political.
