Daryl Hall gets restraining order against John Oates amid legal battle

22:10 23.11.2023

In a shocking turn of events, music lovers were left stunned after it was revealed that Daryl Hall, one-half of the legendary pop rock duo Hall & Oates, had filed a lawsuit against his longtime collaborator, John Oates. The lawsuit was filed in a Nashville, Tennessee court and is currently sealed, leaving fans speculating about the cause of the fallout between the two music icons.

Insiders close to the conflict have now shed some light on the legal battle, revealing that it revolves around "the ground rules of who can sing what as a solo artist, along with money issues of course." It seems that Hall, 77, wasted no time in taking legal action, as he swiftly petitioned the court for a restraining order against Oates, 75, on November 16. The presiding judge promptly granted the restraining order the following day.

One possible source of tension may be Oates' recent series of solo shows, where he purportedly sang a number of the duo's joint hits. TMZ reports that concerts on November 9 and 10 were postponed, though it remains unclear whether Hall had any involvement in that decision, given that his lawsuit was not filed until the following week.

Hall has long been credited with writing some of Hall & Oates' biggest songs, including "Kiss on My List," "Rich Girl," and "Private Eyes." In a dismissive tone, Hall appeared on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast last year and declared, "You think John Oates is my partner? He's my business partner. He's not my creative partner." He went on to state, "John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers. We are business partners."

Hall's implication was clear: certain songs were unequivocally his domain, not Oates'. This may have been a point of contention between the two over the years, as tensions had been hinted at previously. Despite their successful partnership, Hall has always emphasized the separation between them, stating, "We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we've always been very separate, and that's a really important thing for me."

TMZ has reported that while Hall has continued to perform the songs he and Oates made famous together, he recently headlined a concert in Tokyo where he regaled a massive audience with the duo's timeless hits.

The news of the lawsuit and restraining order has sent shockwaves through the music industry and among fans of Hall & Oates. The band, formed in the 1970s, has had a storied career, releasing 18 studio albums and achieving six number one singles. Although they have never officially broken up, both Hall and Oates have pursued solo careers in recent years.

It remains unclear exactly what the two musicians are fighting over, but Hall's separation between himself and Oates has been made apparent in previous interviews. During an appearance on Bill Maher's podcast, Hall used the example of the band's hit song "Kiss on My List" to illustrate their separation. While Oates is listed as a co-producer on the track, he is not listed as a songwriter.

Representatives for Hall and Oates have yet to respond to inquiries about the ongoing legal battle. The lawsuit is listed under the category of contract/debt on the Nashville Chancery Court's website. CBS News has reached out to Hall's attorney and Oates' business manager for further information.

Despite the apparent tension between them, Hall and Oates have a long history together. They met while freshmen at Temple University and struck up a friendship and musical collaboration after a chance encounter in an elevator. In a 2017 interview with "CBS Sunday Morning," the duo reflected on their unexpected journey. "Our job is the job that everyone dreams of," Oates remarked. "Play instruments, sing, write music, make records. Why would you wanna quit?"

As the legal battle continues to unfold, fans of Hall & Oates are left to wonder if their beloved duo will ever reconcile and whether their iconic partnership will ever be the same again.
