Norovirus Outbreak Hits Students Following $1 Burrito Event

10:57 24.11.2023

An outbreak of norovirus has been reported at Northwestern University after a $1 burrito event held on campus. Students began experiencing symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea after consuming food from the event last Saturday. The Evanston Health and Human Services Department launched an investigation following the complaints. The department conducted a thorough inspection of Big Wig Tacos & Burritos, the restaurant that hosted the event, and reviewed their employee health policy and cleaning procedures. The restaurant has fully cooperated with the investigation.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can affect people of all ages. Symptoms typically develop within 12 to 48 hours after exposure and include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea. The health department stated that these symptoms usually subside within one to three days. The virus can spread through direct contact, as well as through contaminated food and surfaces.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends regular handwashing with soap and water to prevent the contraction of norovirus. It is important to wash hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the restroom or before handling food. Additionally, rinsing fruits and vegetables before consumption is advised.

Foodborne illnesses affect millions of people in the United States every year. According to the CDC, approximately 48 million people fall ill due to foodborne illnesses, with 128,000 requiring hospitalization and 3,000 resulting in death. In a notable case in 2020, Mexican fast-food chain Chipotle was fined $25 million for a norovirus outbreak that affected over 1,100 customers between 2015 and 2018. This was the largest fine ever recorded for a food safety case in the US.

The investigation into the norovirus outbreak at Northwestern University is ongoing. The Evanston Health and Human Services Department is working to determine the source of the outbreak and prevent further cases. Both the health department and Big Wig Tacos & Burritos have been approached for additional comments on the situation.
