Phillips ditches House race to focus on Biden challenge

13:53 25.11.2023

In a surprising turn of events, U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota has announced that he will not be running for re-election. This announcement comes as Phillips, a Democrat, has been gaining attention for his bid to challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024.

Phillips, a three-term congressman and millionaire businessman, has been critical of Biden's performance and lackluster approval ratings. He believes that it is time for a change and that the Democratic party is heading towards a disaster in the upcoming November elections. Citing polls that show Biden trailing Republican front runner Donald Trump in key states, Phillips believes that the party needs a new candidate to secure victory.

In a post on the X social media platform, Phillips stated, "It's time to pass the torch, it's time for change, and our best days are yet to come." He linked this post to an interview he gave to the Minnesota Star Tribune, where he further explained his decision. Phillips expressed that running for re-election while simultaneously challenging Biden would be unproductive and uncomfortable. He believes that it would be irresponsible to continue stringing along his constituents and potential candidates who may be interested in running.

Phillips also expressed his gratitude for serving Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District, describing it as the most joyful experience of his life. However, he firmly believes that it is time for change and that his presidential campaign takes precedence over seeking re-election.

This announcement comes just days after Phillips faced backlash from fellow Democrats for his comments about Vice President Kamala Harris. In an interview with The Atlantic, Phillips stated that voters have no faith in Harris to succeed Biden. He criticized her preparedness, disposition, and competencies for the office. Phillips issued an apology to Harris, stating that his comments were not reflective of his personal experience with the vice president and that he respects her.

Despite Phillips' long-shot challenge to Biden for the Democratic nomination, it is unlikely to significantly impact Biden's chances. The incumbent president has deep resources, official party support, and has reshaped the party's nominating contest calendar to deter early challengers.

As the 2024 campaign trail continues, it will be interesting to see how Phillips' decision and his criticisms of the current administration shape the Democratic primary race. Updates on the campaign trail, exclusive interviews, and more can be found on Fox News Digital's election hub.
