Israeli hostages released: Here's what we know

06:50 26.11.2023

In a significant development, Hamas released a second group of Israeli hostages on Saturday as part of a cease-fire deal. This comes just a day after the release of another 13 hostages. The group released on Saturday consisted of all women and children, including six members of an extended family from the ravaged Israeli border village of Be'eri. These individuals were kidnapped during Hamas's terror attack on October 7th. It is important to note that this release follows the release or rescue of five other hostages earlier in the fighting.

Among those released on Saturday is Shoshan Haran, a 67-year-old woman who was taken hostage from Kibbutz Be'eri along with six other members of her extended family. Tragically, her husband, Avshalom Haran, was killed in the assault, along with her sister, Lilach Kipnis, a psychologist and peace activist, and Lilach's husband, Evyatar Kipnis. The body of Mr. Kipnis's caregiver, Paul Castelvi, was found in a nearby forest. The extended family, all residents of Be'eri, had been celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot when the village was struck. Several members of the family were considered missing for days and weeks before being identified as among the dead or kidnapped. Shoshan Haran holds Israeli and German citizenship and is a plant protection expert who founded the nonprofit organization Fair Planet.

Adi Shoham, a 38-year-old woman, was also released along with her son, Naveh, aged 8, and her daughter, Yahel, aged 3. Unfortunately, Adi's husband, Tal Shoham, remains in captivity. Adi had been working in recent years to promote mindfulness as a means of easing the stress faced by residents of southern Israel who have lived under the constant threat of rocket fire from Gaza. Another individual released is Yuval Haran, Adi's brother and Shoshan Haran's son. Yuval was away from the kibbutz at the time of the Oct. 7th attack and became the voice of his captive family, participating in a five-day march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to bring attention to their plight.

Sharon Avigdori, a 52-year-old drama therapist, and her daughter Noam Avigdori, aged 12, were visiting their family in Be'eri when they were seized. Sharon's husband, Hen Avigdori, and their son Omer had stayed home that weekend. Hen, a television writer, has been actively working to secure the release of his wife and daughter, describing his wife's work as "changing the world". He fondly describes Noam as a top student with a sarcastic sense of humor.

Emily Hand, a 9-year-old Irish Israeli, was kidnapped from a sleepover at a friend's house in Kibbutz Be'eri and turned 9 while in captivity. Her family initially believed she had been killed in the attack, but later received the devastating news that she had been kidnapped. Emily's older sister, Natalie Hand, expressed the family's despair at the false news of her death, stating that they had mourned her loss, only to learn later that she had been abducted. Despite the rollercoaster of emotions, Emily's father, Thomas Hand, remains determined to bring his daughter home and has received support from Ireland's president.

Maya Regev, a 21-year-old woman, was attending the Tribe of Nova music festival on October 7th when Hamas attackers infiltrated Israel and massacred hundreds of young festivalgoers. Maya's brother, Itay, who attended the festival with her, is still believed to be held in Gaza. Their father, Ilan Regev Derby, described the haunting last conversation he had with Maya, which he recorded on his phone. In a heartbreaking video released by Hamas, Itay is shown in the back of a pickup truck with his hands bound. Another friend they attended the festival with, Omer Shem Tov, is also still believed to be held captive. Maya's mother, Mirit Regev, expressed mixed emotions, stating her excitement and happiness about Maya's release while her heart remains split knowing her son is still in captivity.

The group of released hostages also includes Alma Or, aged 13, and Noam Or, aged 17, who were kidnapped from their home in Be'eri. They were taken hostage along with their father, Dror, who is still believed to be held in Gaza. Tragically, their mother, Yonat, was among dozens killed in the attack on Kibbutz Be'eri. Another young girl, Hila Rotem Shoshani, aged 12, was hiding in her family's safe room with her mother, Raaya, when they were kidnapped from their home in Kibbutz Be'eri. Raaya texted her brother, telling him they were being taken, which was the last anyone heard from them. The family was informed on October 29th that Raaya and Hila were being held captive.

In addition to these individuals, Shiri Weiss, aged 53, and her daughter Noga Weiss, aged 18, were also among those released. They were kidnapped from Kibbutz Be'eri, with Noga having managed to send a text message to her family before being taken. The family was able to track Noga's live location through WhatsApp as she was moved into Gaza. Shiri's husband, Ilan Weiss, is still considered missing.

Moving on to the group released on Friday, it is reported that after nearly seven weeks in captivity, 13 hostages abducted by Hamas and other groups during the October 7th attacks on Israel were released. The release of these hostages was part of a deal that paused the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
