A tanker carrying a cargo of phosphoric acid, with apparent ties to Israel, was seized near the coast of Yemen on Sunday in a suspected piracy attack. The vessel, Central Park, is owned by Zodiac Maritime, a London-based international ship management company owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer's Zodiac Group. The company confirmed the seizure, stating that their priority is the safety of the 22 crew members onboard. The tanker, captained by a Turkish national, has a multinational crew consisting of Russian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Indian, Georgian, and Filipino nationals. The Pentagon confirmed that an Israeli-owned ship was attacked but did not provide further details. Private intelligence firm Ambrey also confirmed the seizure, which is believed to have occurred in the Gulf of Aden. The area where the seizure took place is under the control of Yemen's internationally recognized government and its allies. It is believed to be a significant distance from Houthi stronghold territories, and Somali pirates generally do not operate in that area. The seizure of the Central Park comes amid an uptick in maritime attacks linked to the Israel-Hamas war. In recent days, a U.S. Navy vessel responded to a distress call from an Israeli-linked tanker off the coast of Yemen and was fired upon. The USS Mason, along with a Japanese destroyer, apprehended the suspects, who are now being questioned by the U.S. military. Additionally, a container ship owned by another Israeli billionaire came under attack by a suspected Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean. These attacks on shipping vessels highlight the increasing targeting of global shipping in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The truce between the two sides has halted fighting, but tensions remain high. Zodiac Maritime has been targeted previously in a drone attack that was attributed to Iran, resulting in the deaths of two crew members aboard the oil tanker Mercer Street.
