Authorities warn about safety concerns as iOS 17's NameDrop feature prompts worry

18:14 27.11.2023

Apple's new iOS 17 operating system has introduced a feature called NameDrop that has sparked concern among authorities and users alike. This feature, which is activated by default when users update their software, allows iPhone owners to easily share their contact information with other devices in close proximity. However, authorities warn that this could potentially give unauthorized individuals access to personal information without the user's knowledge.

To utilize the NameDrop feature, users simply need to hold their iPhone's screen close to the top of another person's iPhone. This action will cause both devices to vibrate and establish a connection. Once connected, a prompt to share and receive contact cards will appear on both screens. Users have the option to select which contact information, such as phone numbers and email addresses, they wish to share.

While NameDrop may seem like a convenient way to exchange information, police departments across the United States have issued warnings to parents about the potential risks associated with this feature. The Jefferson Hills Police Department, for example, advised parents to disable the feature on their children's iPhones. They emphasized the concern that simply bringing two phones close together could result in the sharing of contact information.

To disable NameDrop, iPhone users can follow a simple process. Firstly, they need to access their iPhone's settings and tap on "General." From there, they should select AirDrop and toggle the "Bringing Devices Together" sharing option to the off position.

Apple customers have been gradually discovering the various features introduced in the iOS 17 update, including NameDrop. This feature, similar to AirDrop, allows users to quickly share their contact information with nearby iPhones or Apple Watches without physically exchanging their phones. By holding the display of their iPhone a few centimeters from another person's device, a connection is established. A glow will appear on both screens to indicate the successful connection. Users can then choose to share their contact card, receive the other person's card, or mutually opt for not sharing any information.

Despite the simplicity of the NameDrop feature, numerous individuals have taken to social media to caution against using it. Concerns have been raised about the potential oversharing of personal information without the user's awareness. Law enforcement agencies in the United States have also issued security warnings, particularly to parents, highlighting the risks associated with sharing contact information. However, Forbes disputes these warnings, explaining that the user would need physical access to an unlocked iPhone in order to receive any information. Forbes clarifies that the NameDrop feature only works when iPhones with iOS 17 are physically touching at the top of the devices. Furthermore, the contact information being shared is limited to the user's self-created Contact Card, giving them complete control over what information is shared.

In conclusion, while NameDrop may offer a convenient way to exchange contact information, authorities and users are expressing concerns about the potential privacy risks involved. Apple has provided an option to disable the feature, and it is advised that users carefully consider the implications of sharing their personal information with other devices.
