Tragic death of Montana ice climber at Hyalite Canyon's Grotto Falls

00:28 28.11.2023

A tragic incident occurred in Montana over the weekend, as a Montana man lost his life while enjoying his passion for ice climbing. According to authorities, the victim has been identified as 36-year-old Kyle Allen Rott, a resident of Montana and an avid ice climber. The incident took place in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, specifically near Grotto Falls in Hyalite Canyon.

The first indication of trouble came when a GPS monitoring service detected an activated signal near Grotto Falls. This prompted the service to immediately notify the authorities. Soon after, at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office received a call from the GPS device monitoring service alerting them about the activated device. Not long after this call, a 911 call was received from an eyewitness who witnessed the tragic fall and reported that an ice climber had fallen and was injured.

Upon receiving these distressing reports, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office wasted no time in mobilizing their search and rescue teams. Alongside them, Two Bear Air Rescue and Billings Clinic MedFlight helicopters were also dispatched to the Grotto Falls trailhead. In total, five search and rescue teams were deployed to the area where Rott was located.

Once the search and rescue crews reached the scene, they provided immediate medical attention to Rott. Despite their best efforts, they made the difficult decision to hoist him onto a helicopter and transport him to Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center. Tragically, Rott succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital. The coroners from the sheriff's office were present at the hospital and determined that his cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, sustained during the fall.

In the aftermath of this devastating incident, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer took to Facebook to express his condolences to Rott's family and friends in South Dakota. He also extended his gratitude to the dedicated search and rescue team members who responded swiftly to the scene and did everything they could to save Rott's life.

The Custer Gallatin National Forest, where the incident occurred, is a vast area covering over 3 million acres north of Yellowstone National Park. It is known for its stunning landscapes and offers various recreational activities, including ice climbing. However, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with such extreme sports and the importance of safety measures.

Montana has lost a cherished member of its ice climbing community, and Kyle Allen Rott will be remembered by his loved ones and fellow climbers for his passion and adventurous spirit. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities will continue their efforts to ensure the safety of those who partake in outdoor activities in the area.
