Elon Musk's Israel visit: Meeting leaders amidst growing accusations of antisemitism

04:12 28.11.2023

Tech mogul Elon Musk, who has recently been facing accusations of antisemitism, accompanied Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a tour of a kibbutz that was attacked by Hamas militants on October 7. Musk's visit to Israel is seen as an effort to combat claims of antisemitism and show support for Israel. During the tour, Musk and Netanyahu visited Kfar Aza, a village that was targeted by Hamas, where they saw the aftermath of the attack, including bullet casings and burnt-down homes. Musk was seen taking photos of the devastation on his iPhone. The kibbutz was also the home of Abigail Edan, a four-year-old American dual citizen who was taken hostage by Hamas and released as part of a ceasefire agreement.

In addition to the tour, Musk and Netanyahu held a live discussion on X, where they discussed the events in Kfar Aza and the impact of the war. Musk expressed his distress at the killing of innocent civilians, including children, and emphasized the need to combat rising antisemitism online. He also mentioned his proposal to set up Starlink communications in the Gaza Strip to address the region's blackouts during the war. Initially, Israeli Communications Shlomo Karhi objected to the idea, citing concerns that Hamas could use it for terrorist activities. However, it was reported that an agreement in principle has been reached between Israel and Musk, allowing the operation of Starlink satellite units in Israel, including the Gaza Strip, with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications.

Musk's visit to Israel comes after he faced backlash for endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory on X. His endorsement drew immediate outrage and condemnation, including from the White House. There were also reports that X showed ads from major corporations alongside pro-Nazi content. Musk's platform, X, has since filed a lawsuit against Media Matters for America, accusing them of trying to drive advertisers away and destroy the company. Musk has been vocal in denying accusations of antisemitism, stating that he wishes "a prosperous and exciting future for all."

During his visit to Israel, Musk is expected to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and relatives of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza to discuss combating rising antisemitism online. Musk's trip is seen as an opportunity to repair his image and demonstrate his support for Israel. The visit also highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding X and its handling of hate speech and antisemitic content.
