The Matthew Perry Foundation was launched on November 3, just days after Perry's untimely death at the age of 54 from an apparent drowning at his California home. The foundation seeks to continue Perry's commitment to helping others battling addiction, drawing inspiration from his own experiences and words. The mission statement of the foundation affirms that it will be guided by Perry's enduring commitment and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible.

Although the cause of Matthew Perry's death has been deferred by the coroner, pending toxicology results, his friends and family gathered on November 3 to remember the late actor. The memorial took place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, which holds the final resting place of many Hollywood stars, including Lucille Ball, Andy Gibb, John Ritter, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, and Paul Walker, among others. This location holds significance as it is not far from the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, where the iconic TV show “Friends” was filmed.

Keith Morrison, who is listed as the informant on Perry's death certificate, has been vocal about his admiration for his stepson. In an interview with People in 2020, Morrison spoke about Perry's talent, intensity, and intelligence. He shared anecdotes from Perry's childhood, recalling his success on the hockey team and the tennis court. Morrison expressed that Perry's success as Chandler Bing on “Friends” did not surprise him, as the role perfectly matched Perry's sense of humor and personality. However, initial toxicology reports indicated that there were no traces of meth or fentanyl in his system at the time of his death.
