OpenAI reinstates CEO Sam Altman to board after investigation

01:16 09.03.2024

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been reinstated to the board of directors after a secretive probe into the circumstances surrounding his shock firing last November. The company expressed "full confidence" in Altman's leadership, following an investigation by the law firm WilmerHale. The report found that Altman's removal was due to a breakdown in trust between him and the prior board, but his conduct did not warrant his dismissal. Altman, along with company president Greg Brockman, returned to their roles after a swift comeback orchestrated by supporters and Microsoft. The board has added three new female directors to address diversity concerns: Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo. Altman praised OpenAI's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, and expressed gratitude to the board and WilmerHale for their support. The company also announced plans to improve governance, including new corporate guidelines and a whistleblower hotline. Despite internal conflicts and a lawsuit from co-founder Elon Musk, OpenAI is aiming to move past its turmoil and focus on its mission of developing safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence.
