Longtime KY lawmaker Kevin Bratcher sets sights on Louisville Metro Council seat

09:56 01.12.2023

In a surprising move, Kentucky State Rep. Kevin Bratcher, a long-time Republican lawmaker, announced his plans to run for a Louisville Metro Council seat next year. This decision marks the end of Bratcher's distinguished career in the Kentucky House, where he has been actively involved since 1997. Throughout his tenure, Bratcher has been a key figure in various crucial issues, including school safety, juvenile justice, and election legislation.

Bratcher's political journey has been remarkable. He played an instrumental role in the historic shift of power in the Kentucky House back in 2017 when Republicans gained control after a wave of victories in the 2016 elections. As the majority party whip, Bratcher helped guide the Republicans through this significant transition. This triumph solidified the GOP's control over the Kentucky legislature, as they already held the Senate.

Currently, Bratcher serves as the chairman of a House committee responsible for election legislation and proposed constitutional amendments. This position gives him substantial influence in shaping the state's political landscape. Bratcher's decision to run for a Metro Council seat follows a recent trend among Louisville-area lawmakers, as Democratic state Rep. Josie Raymond also announced her plans to pursue a similar path.

Bratcher's House district encompasses parts of Jefferson County, particularly Fern Creek. In a phone interview, Bratcher expressed his belief that the move to the Metro Council is a natural fit for him. As he grows older, Bratcher's interest in local issues intensifies, with a strong desire to improve the quality of life in Fern Creek and the city of Louisville. He hopes to contribute significantly to his community if he gains the support of the voters.

Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne praised Bratcher's legislative accomplishments in a statement, highlighting his contributions to juvenile justice and public education. Despite Bratcher's preference to work behind the scenes, Osborne acknowledged the profound and positive impact he has had on Louisville and Jefferson County.

Bratcher's leadership on critical issues such as school safety and juvenile justice has been crucial. He has been at the forefront of efforts to enhance school safety measures and reform the state's troubled juvenile justice system. As the chairman of the House committee overseeing election legislation and proposed constitutional amendments, Bratcher's work may attract significant attention during the upcoming legislative session, particularly if a constitutional amendment regarding school choice issues is on the agenda.

Bratcher's announcement coincides with the ongoing recruitment of candidates for next year's legislative races by both Republicans and Democrats. The GOP currently holds supermajorities in both chambers of the Kentucky legislature. Another Republican lawmaker, state Rep. Danny Bentley, recently declared that he will not seek re-election in 2022. Bentley, who represents a district in northeastern Kentucky, has been instrumental in passing legislation to support rural hospitals' finances and make insulin more affordable for patients. He holds the position of chair in the House budget subcommittee on Health and Family Services.

As Bratcher and Bentley bow out of their respective roles, the political landscape in Kentucky undergoes significant changes. The upcoming legislative races will undoubtedly be closely watched, as the GOP seeks to maintain its stronghold on the Kentucky legislature. Meanwhile, Bratcher's bid for a Louisville Metro Council seat adds another layer of anticipation to the political environment in the state's largest city.
