DeSantis accuses Newsom of presidential ambitions, vows conservatives won't be fooled

23:33 02.12.2023

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a GOP presidential hopeful, launched a scathing attack on California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of lying about his policies during their recent debate. Speaking at a campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa, DeSantis condemned the left and the media for attempting to deceive the public. He criticized the White House press secretary for claiming that the border was secure, stating that they think the public is ignorant and that they are willing to say anything. DeSantis then turned his attention to his debate with Newsom, calling out the California leader for his false claims. He disputed Newsom's assertion that California has lower taxes than Florida, emphasizing that even those who support California's policies acknowledge the state's high tax rates. DeSantis vowed not to be gaslit or lied to, asserting that the truth is what the country needs.

During their debate on Thursday night, Newsom claimed that Florida taxes lower-income workers more than California taxes millionaires. DeSantis immediately challenged this statement, questioning the notion that people would move from Florida to California to pay fewer taxes. He highlighted the fact that individuals migrate to Florida because of its lower taxes and the absence of an income tax. DeSantis also pointed out that California imposes a higher sales tax than Florida.

Following their intense exchange, DeSantis accused Newsom of preparing to run for president, despite the Democrat's denial. Speaking in Sioux City, Iowa, DeSantis criticized the failed policies in California and warned against embracing them nationally. He referred to California as the "petri dish" for the Democrats' agenda and speculated that Newsom could potentially be the face of that agenda. While there has been speculation about Newsom's presidential aspirations, he has repeatedly denied any plans for a White House run.

DeSantis, on the other hand, is actively campaigning for the Republican nomination in 2024, although current polls show him trailing former President Donald Trump. Newsom took a swipe at DeSantis during the debate, suggesting that neither of them would be their party's nominee in 2024. DeSantis fired back, accusing Newsom of wanting to run for president but refusing to admit it. The tensions between the two governors highlight the ideological divide and the potential clash between conservative and liberal policies in future elections.
