Beyonce's "Renaissance" Dominates Box Office with $21 Million Debut

04:28 04.12.2023

In a surprising turn of events, Beyonce's concert film, "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce," dominated the box office this weekend, earning an impressive $21 million in North American ticket sales. The post-Thanksgiving, early December box office is typically slow, but Renaissance managed to defy the odds and become the first film in 20 years to open with over $20 million during this weekend.

"Renaissance," which was written, directed, and produced by Beyonce, offers fans an intimate look into the tour for her Grammy-winning album. The film premiered in 2,539 theaters across the United States and Canada, as well as 94 international territories, where it earned an additional $6.4 million from 2,621 theaters. AMC Theatres expressed their gratitude to Beyonce for bringing this incredible film directly to her fans, acknowledging her immense talent as not just a performer, but also as a producer and director.

Despite the release of several other new films, including "Godzilla Minus One," the Hindi-language "Animal," Angel Studios' sci-fi thriller "The Shift," and Lionsgate's revenge flick "Silent Night," the overall weekend was slow for the box office. The top 10 films combined are expected to gross only $85 million in total. However, this lull provided AMC Theatres with a perfect opportunity to showcase Renaissance and its potential.

While Renaissance did not reach the monumental debut of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which earned an impressive $92.8 million in October, it is still considered a strong start for a concert film. Prior to Swift's record-breaking film, concert films had not surpassed $32 million in their debuts. Renaissance exceeded expectations by earning $21 million, showcasing the immense popularity of Beyonce and her ability to connect with audiences.

Both Beyonce and Taylor Swift chose to partner with AMC Theatres for the distribution of their films, deviating from the traditional studio route. The two superstars have shown support for each other and have made appearances at each other's premieres. They have also both released previous films on Netflix, with Beyonce's Miss Americana and Taylor Swift's "Homecoming." Additionally, both artists reportedly receive at least 50% of ticket sales. Notably, ticket prices for Renaissance were higher than average, with an average ticket cost of $23.32 compared to Swift's $20.78.

Critics and audiences alike have showered Renaissance with praise, resulting in a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Opening weekend audiences were polled and gave the film an A+ CinemaScore. The estimated audience size for Renaissance was around 900,000, slightly older than the audience for Swift's film.

Reflecting on the success of both Renaissance and "The Eras Tour," Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, noted that having two concert films topping the charts in a single year is unprecedented. However, he cautioned against direct comparisons, emphasizing that both films are unique in their own ways. "The Eras Tour" was considered an outlier, benefiting from specific circumstances.

In terms of other films at the box office, "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," a Lionsgate prequel, secured second place with an estimated $14.5 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic earnings to over $121 million. The Japanese blockbuster "Godzilla Minus One" debuted in third place, earning $11 million from 2,308 locations. Distributed by Toho International, the film only cost $15 million to produce and has already earned $23 million in Japan.

Other notable films in the top five included "Trolls Band Together," which landed in fourth place, earning $7.6 million in its third weekend, and Disney's "Wish," which fell 62% from its underwhelming first weekend, earning $7.4 million from 3,900 locations. The highly anticipated The Marvels is also winding down in its fourth weekend, struggling to reach profitability with a global tally of $197 million against its reported $300 million production and marketing budget.

Looking ahead, the final weeks of 2023 are expected to bring a boost in ticket sales with the release of films like Wonka and "The Color Purple." The industry is projected to reach a $9 billion year, still trailing the pre-pandemic norm of $11 billion, but a significant improvement from recent years. As the awards season approaches, moviegoers can look forward to a diverse range of films to choose from.

Despite a slow Thanksgiving and a relatively quiet weekend, moviegoers can still enjoy the breadth and depth of the movies currently in theaters. Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, reassures audiences that there are many solid options available and encourages them to take advantage of what the industry has to offer.
