Fatal shark attack claims U.S. woman paddle boarding in Bahamas

19:20 04.12.2023

In a tragic incident, an American woman lost her life in a shark attack while paddleboarding off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas. The incident occurred on Monday morning, and according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the woman, who remains unidentified, was injured shortly before 11 a.m. She was paddleboarding with a family member near the Sandals resort in Nassau, about three-quarters of a mile away from the shoreline.

Authorities were immediately alerted, and they swiftly made their way to the scene by boat. Despite efforts to revive her, performing CPR while bringing her back to shore, it was discovered that the woman had tragically succumbed to her injuries. Photos captured by Reuters at the scene depict police pushing a covered body on a medical stretcher, highlighting the devastating aftermath of the incident.

The victim, a woman in her 40s who was visiting from Boston, suffered serious injuries to the right side of her body, including the right hip region and her right upper limb, according to the police. The attack took place near a resort in western New Providence, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

While fatal shark attacks in the Bahamas are relatively uncommon, there have been reports of similar incidents in recent times. Just last month, a 47-year-old German woman vanished during a diving excursion in waters off West End, Grand Bahama, after encountering a shark. In another incident in September 2022, a 58-year-old American woman was tragically killed in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the waters of New Providence.

During a news conference broadcasted by ZNS Bahamas, the police confirmed that the woman and her male relative were paddleboarding at a resort when the attack occurred. The lifeguard on duty witnessed the incident and promptly went out in a boat to rescue them. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the woman's injuries were too severe, and she was declared dead by emergency responders.

CBS News reached out to the Royal Bahamas Police Force for further information, and their response is still awaited. Additionally, several witnesses from the United States claimed on Facebook that they had seen the aftermath of the attack, prompting further investigation.

This tragic incident in the Bahamas comes just one day after a 26-year-old woman lost her life in a shark attack while swimming with her young daughter in Mexico. These incidents serve as a reminder of the rare but real danger posed by sharks in coastal waters.

Shark attacks in the Bahamas are infrequent, but recent reports suggest an increase in such encounters. Last month, a German woman went missing during a diving trip off West End, Grand Bahama, after encountering a shark. In June, an Iowa woman was attacked by a shark while scuba diving in the Bahamas, resulting in the amputation of her leg. Additionally, in September 2022, a tourist from Pennsylvania was fatally attacked by a bull shark while snorkeling near Green Cay.

The Bahamas, known for its beautiful beaches and marine life, is home to over 50 species of sharks, including tiger, hammerhead, and Caribbean reef sharks. According to the International Shark Attack File, there were 108 alleged shark-human interactions reported worldwide in 2022. Florida, with 16 confirmed unprovoked attacks, reported the highest number of incidents among all states.

While shark attacks are rare, it is essential for beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize the risk of such tragic incidents.
