Deadly Texas shooting spree leaves six dead, suspect in custody

05:40 07.12.2023

According to authorities, the violent rampage began when Shane James allegedly killed his parents in their home in the San Antonio area. The victims, Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56, were found dead with gunshot wounds to the upper body. The bodies were discovered after James had already been arrested for the subsequent shootings in Austin.

After killing his parents, James stole his father's truck and traveled more than 80 miles to Austin, where he continued his shooting spree. The first shooting in Austin occurred at around 10:45 a.m. when James shot an officer from the Austin Independent School District Police Department in the leg. The officer is recovering from his injuries. Shortly after, James arrived at a nearby home and shot and killed Emmanuel Pop Ba, 32, and Sabrina Rahman, 24. Witnesses reported that James first shot Ba while he was sitting in his truck and then chased Rahman down the street before fatally shooting her.

Later in the afternoon, a cyclist reported being shot and injured in South Austin. The cyclist suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital. The violence came to an end when police found James in the backyard of a home that had been reported as being burglarized. Two people were found dead at the scene, and James allegedly shot at the responding officers, injuring two of them. He then fled the scene, but a short-lived police chase ensued, resulting in his arrest.

As authorities investigate the incidents, they are trying to determine any possible connections between James and the victims in Austin. James has a history of mental health problems and had been previously arrested on charges of assaulting family members. He was also discharged from the military for a domestic violence incident, although details about the incident are still unclear. His parents had reportedly sought to have the conditions of his bond changed, expressing concerns about his mental health.

The affected communities in Texas are now grappling with the aftermath of the shootings and the trauma caused by gun violence. Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to hold James accountable for his crimes, stating that Texas will "impose the full weight of law" on him. James is currently facing charges of capital murder and is expected to be charged with additional offenses. The investigation into the incidents is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
