UNLV shooting: Victims identified and suspect had "target list" prior to attack

04:04 08.12.2023

In a tragic incident at the University of Nevada's Las Vegas campus, a suspected gunman fatally shot three faculty members, but fortunately none of the individuals on the target list became victims, according to Clark County sheriff Kevin McMahill. The police have confirmed that the shooter had a "target list," and all individuals on the list, except for one person who is currently traveling abroad, have been reached. The suspect, identified as Anthony Polito, was killed during a shoot-out with officers shortly after the attack began. Polito was armed with a legally purchased 9mm handgun and nine magazines. When authorities discovered his body, they also found a school target list, leading them to believe that frustration over being rejected for job opportunities at various colleges may have been the motive behind the shooting. Polito, a former college professor, was also dealing with financial difficulties.

The victims of the shooting have been identified as Professor Cha Jan Chang, 64, known as "Jerry," and Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, both from Las Vegas. Chang died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Velez succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The third victim has been identified but authorities are waiting to notify the next of kin. According to law enforcement sources, the third victim was also not a student. The shooter targeted the fourth floor of the UNLV business school, killing the three victims and seriously injuring a fourth individual.

Prior to the shooting, Polito had mailed 22 letters to university faculty members across the United States. Dashcam footage from Polito's vehicle was reviewed by detectives and revealed that some of the envelopes contained an unknown white powder. However, the powder was later determined to be harmless. Authorities are conducting further investigations to understand the significance of these letters.

One of Polito's former students, Paul Whittington, revealed that the former professor had a tendency to obsess over negative feedback from students. Whittington mentioned that Polito would try to identify the students who wrote such feedback and would share it with the class. This behavior made Whittington uncomfortable, and he believes it may have contributed to Polito's mindset leading up to the shooting.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will remain closed on Friday as a result of the shooting, with plans to reopen the following week for final exams. Keith Whitfield, the president of UNLV, expressed his devastation over the "senseless act of violence" that resulted in the loss of three faculty members.

Investigators are continuing to search Polito's apartment in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas, in an effort to gather more evidence. Electronic devices have been confiscated as potential evidence. Authorities have not yet determined a definitive motive for the shooting, but they are exploring the theory that being denied a professor position at UNLV played a role in Polito's actions.

This tragic incident has left the UNLV community in shock, with students and faculty mourning the loss of their colleagues. The university plans to provide support and counseling services for those affected by the shooting.
