Bronny James set to make USC debut months after cardiac arrest

12:00 08.12.2023

USC Trojans' freshman player, Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James, is expected to make his college debut on Sunday when USC faces Long Beach State at the Galen Center. This news was confirmed by USC head basketball coach Andy Enfield, who spoke to reporters on Thursday. Enfield revealed that James participated in his first full-contact practice since suffering a cardiac arrest over the summer. However, the final decision on James' debut will be made after he goes through Friday's practice and is evaluated by the medical team.

James' cardiac event occurred on July 24 during a practice at Galen Center, where the Trojans play and practice. He was immediately attended to and rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. After three days, he was released from the hospital. Doctors later revealed that the cardiac arrest was likely due to a congenital heart defect. James was cleared for a full return to basketball at the end of November, approximately four months after the incident.

Enfield expressed satisfaction with James' progress, stating that he had been working out without contact, focusing on cardio, weight training, and shooting. The coach mentioned that James looked good and felt great, but there will be a minute restriction at the start of the season. Enfield emphasized that the team was excited about James' progress and the fact that he was participating again after going through physical and mental challenges. He also mentioned that there was no prediction on when James would be back, making his return even more incredible considering there is still a significant part of the basketball season ahead.

LeBron James, who has always been supportive of his son, made it clear that he intends to be present at Bronny's college debut. He stated that he would even miss a Lakers game to watch his son take the floor for the first time. The Lakers do not have a game scheduled for Sunday, aligning perfectly with James' plan to be in attendance.

The anticipation surrounding Bronny James' debut at USC has been building up since his cardiac arrest incident. The 19-year-old freshman has been cleared by his doctors for a full return to basketball and has already participated in warmups before a recent USC game against Gonzaga. The James family expressed their gratitude towards the medical team, the USC community, and their fans for their support throughout this challenging period.

Bronny James' collegiate debut is highly anticipated, not only by his family and friends but also by basketball fans around the world. With LeBron James by his side, cheering him on, it is undoubtedly a momentous occasion for the James family. As USC Trojans face Long Beach State on Sunday, all eyes will be on Bronny as he steps onto the court for the first time as a college basketball player.
