Florida boy arrested after hoax 911 call about school shooting so he could 'go home early,' sheriff says

An 11-year-old boy was arrested in Marion Oaks, Florida, after making a hoax 911 call about an active shooter at Horizon Academy middle school. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, triggering a swift and overwhelming response from law enforcement agencies. The call, made by the boy identified as Taryn Louis-Jean, claimed that there was a school shooter walking through the hallway. Despite the lack of convincing details and the boy's refusal to disclose the school's location, dispatchers wasted no time in sending every available deputy to the scene.

The middle school was placed on immediate lockdown as SWAT teams, Aviation units, and various state and federal law enforcement agencies rushed to the campus. The atmosphere inside the school quickly turned tense as fear gripped the students and faculty, unsure of the situation unfolding around them. Law enforcement officials cleared the scene after two hours of intense searching, finding no assailants or weapons. The relief was palpable, but the emotional toll on those involved was undeniable.

It was soon discovered that the 911 call had been traced back to a student's cell phone, which Louis-Jean allegedly seized to make the false report. According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the young boy had told his friend that he wanted to go home early. When the friend left his cell phone unattended, Louis-Jean saw an opportunity and called 911 to report an active shooter. This incident was described as a prank, but the consequences were severe.

Louis-Jean was charged with multiple offenses, including making a false report of a mass shooting, utilizing a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony, disrupting a school function, and misuse of a 911 emergency system. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the law requires individuals who make false reports to pay restitution for the cost of the law enforcement response. In this case, with the extensive resources deployed, the bill would amount to "hundreds upon hundreds of man-hours."

Sheriff Woods condemned the boy's actions, expressing his concern for the safety and peace of mind of the community. "I will not tolerate my young citizens being fearful of going to school because you wanted to be a 'jokester' in hopes of going home," he said in a statement. With the boy now facing the legal consequences of his actions, the community can begin to heal from the emotional impact of this hoax call. However, it serves as a reminder of the importance of taking every threat seriously and the need to address the underlying issues that contribute to such behavior.
