An American chocolatier, Jonathan Lehrer, and his suspected accomplices have been charged with the murder of Canadian animator Daniel Langlois and his partner Dominique Marchand on the Caribbean island of Dominica. The bodies of Langlois and Marchand were found incinerated in a burned car near their resort, the Coulibri Ridge Eco Resort, days after they were reported missing. Authorities believe that the couple was murdered between November 30 and December 1. Lehrer, who owns the Bois Cotlette Estate next to Langlois' resort, was taken into custody along with his wife, an American man named Robert Snider Jr., and a Dominican man. Lehrer's wife and the Dominican man were arrested but not charged. The motive for the murders has not been revealed, but authorities suspect that it may be connected to a long-standing feud between Langlois, 66, and Lehrer, 57, over a public road that runs through Lehrer's estate. Langlois took Lehrer to court in 2018 over the road dispute, and a High Court ruled in favor of Langlois in 2019, declaring the road to be public and ordering Lehrer not to block Langlois' guests. Lehrer's father has expressed disbelief in his son's involvement in the murders and called him a successful businessman, not a murderer. The investigation is ongoing, with independent investigators requested to assist with DNA and forensic analysis. The police have been in touch with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police regarding the case. The deaths of Langlois and Marchand have been met with deep sadness, as they were known for their pioneering work in sustainable luxury tourism at the Coulibri Ridge Eco Resort.
