Big Dom banned from Eagles sidelines vs. Cowboys in fallout from Dre Greenlaw fracas

20:43 09.12.2023

Philadelphia Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro has been banned by the NFL from being on the sideline during Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys. This comes after DiSandro was ejected from last week's game for a scuffle with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Although DiSandro is still allowed to travel with the team and perform his other work duties, he will not be permitted on the sideline. The Eagles released a statement acknowledging the restriction and stating that their ongoing conversations with the NFL will be respected.

The incident occurred in the third quarter when DiSandro pulled Greenlaw off Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith and shouted at him. Greenlaw, who had already been penalized for unnecessary roughness, reacted by reaching over two officials and putting his hand in DiSandro's face. Both DiSandro and Greenlaw were told to leave the field, with DiSandro receiving a roaring ovation from Eagles fans as he walked to the locker room. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni defended DiSandro, stating that he believed DiSandro was trying to defuse the situation and that it was unfortunate that anyone was ejected from the game.

Greenlaw, on the other hand, expressed no ill will towards DiSandro and acknowledged that apologies had been exchanged between them after the 49ers' victory over the Eagles. He described DiSandro as a genuine guy who was well-liked within the organization. Greenlaw was fined $10,927 by the league for the unnecessary roughness penalty, marking his third personal foul of the season and his second ejection in the past two years.

In response to the incident, the NFL sent a memo to teams reiterating a policy that prohibits non-player personnel from making physical contact, taunting, or directing insults towards opposing players or officials. The memo also emphasized that only game officials or coaches should intervene in altercations and warned of potential fines or suspensions for violations.

Dom DiSandro, known as "Big Dom," has been with the Eagles since 1999 and serves as a senior adviser to general manager Howie Roseman. In addition to his role in security, DiSandro oversees safety measures for players, coaches, and executives, as well as security during team travel. He is also responsible for educating the team on the NFL's personal conduct policy.

DiSandro's meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell at the league office suggests that the incident is still under review, and further discipline may be considered. However, for the upcoming game against the Cowboys, DiSandro will be restricted to performing his duties without access to the sideline. The league is continuing to examine additional evidence related to the altercation. Greenlaw may also face a fine for his hit on DeVonta Smith, which sparked the sideline confrontation.

Overall, this incident has put a halt to DiSandro's reputation for creating viral sideline moments. While his ban from the sidelines is not a suspension, it serves as a reminder of the NFL's strict rules regarding physical contact and behavior towards opposing players and officials.
