Family sues school after bullied teen's suicide

18:40 30.01.2024

In a tragic turn of events, the family of Adriana Kuch, a 14-year-old girl from New Jersey who died by suicide last year after being bullied, has announced that they are filing a lawsuit against the Central Regional School District. The lawsuit alleges that the school district and its officials failed to protect Adriana from a "culture of violence" at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township.

According to Adriana's father, Michael Kuch, the bullying began before the assault that was captured on video and shared on social media. The video showed Adriana being attacked by at least one other student as she walked with her boyfriend in the school hallway. The family claims that the video and subsequent cyberbullying led to Adriana's public humiliation and ultimately her decision to take her own life.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Adriana's family, names the Central Regional Board of Education, the former superintendent Dr. Triantafillos Parlapanides, the high school principal, an assistant principal, and others as defendants. The family's attorney, Bill Krais, alleges that the school district knew about the bullying and violence at the high school but did little to stop it. Krais also claims that Parlapanides defamed the Kuch family by fabricating stories about their personal lives.

The Kuch family is seeking unspecified damages for negligence, defamation, and the infliction of emotional distress. They hope that their lawsuit will bring attention to the issue of bullying and prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy. Krais stated that Michael Kuch thinks about his daughter every day and wakes up in the middle of the night screaming her name.

The Central Regional School District has not yet been served with a copy of the complaint and has not had the opportunity to review it. A spokesperson for the district stated that the school board is limited in what it can say publicly due to the ongoing litigation.

This lawsuit comes just days before the one-year anniversary of Adriana's death. Her tragic story has sparked outrage and protests outside of Central Regional High School. The community is demanding justice for Adriana and calling for action to address the issue of bullying in schools.

Adriana's case is not an isolated incident. Another bullying accusation has been made at Central Regional High School, further highlighting the need for change. The district has stated that it has taken steps to address bullying since Adriana's death.

The Kuch family is not only seeking justice through the legal system but is also actively engaged with local and national organizations that aim to eliminate bullying. They hope that their efforts will bring about meaningful change and prevent other families from experiencing the devastating loss they have endured.

It is important to note that if you or someone you know is in emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, there are resources available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine is also available for support.
