DeSantis' wife sparks controversy over Iowa caucus rules

22:59 09.12.2023

In a surprising turn of events, Casey DeSantis, the wife of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, faced backlash from the rival campaign of former President Donald J. Trump for her efforts to recruit out-of-state supporters to participate in Iowa's Republican nominating process. During a recent appearance on Fox News alongside her husband, Ms. DeSantis encouraged supporters from across the country to "descend upon the state of Iowa to be a part of the caucus." She specifically targeted mothers and grandmothers who support her husband, stating that residency in Iowa was not a requirement to participate in the caucus.

However, the Republican Party of Iowa quickly refuted Ms. DeSantis's claim, pointing out that caucus rules prohibit nonresidents from voting. The party took to social media to remind potential participants, stating, "Remember: you must be a legal resident of Iowa and the precinct you live in and bring photo ID with you to participate in the #iacaucus!"

The Trump campaign wasted no time in accusing the DeSantis campaign of spreading misinformation about the caucuses. They suggested that the call to action was part of a broader scheme to alter the outcome in Iowa, where polls show that Mr. Trump holds a significant lead as the Republican front-runner. In a statement, the Trump campaign condemned the DeSantises' "dirty and illegal tactics" and urged all Trump supporters to be aware of their alleged plot to rig the caucus through fraud.

Attempting to clarify her earlier remarks, Ms. DeSantis took to a different social media platform and stated that while only registered voters in Iowa can vote in the caucus, there is still a way for others to participate. She wrote, "There is a way for others to participate" and encouraged non-residents to come to Iowa as volunteers in support of Ron DeSantis.

Unfazed by the clarification, the Trump campaign continued to seize upon Ms. DeSantis's initial remarks, calling on Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who has endorsed Mr. DeSantis and snubbed Mr. Trump, to clarify the caucus eligibility rules. Additionally, they demanded that Ms. Reynolds disavow the tactics promoted by Ms. DeSantis, labeling them as "flagrantly wrong" and potentially disenfranchising caucusgoers. As of now, Governor Reynolds has not responded to these demands.

As the Iowa caucus draws closer, with a scheduled date of January 15th, polls indicate that former President Donald Trump maintains a significant lead over both Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. In light of this, the Trump campaign's condemnation of the DeSantises' tactics highlights the intensity and competitiveness of the Republican nomination race.

It remains to be seen how the controversy surrounding Casey DeSantis's call for out-of-state participation will impact the Iowa caucus. With tensions running high and accusations of foul play being thrown around, the Republican Party of Iowa and Governor Reynolds face pressure to address the eligibility rules and clarify the situation ahead of the upcoming nominating contest.
