Minnesota grocery worker killed by man wielding golf club in shocking attack

00:10 10.12.2023

In a shocking and gruesome incident, a beloved store clerk and prominent member of the community in Minneapolis was tragically killed on Friday. The 66-year-old victim, identified by neighbors as dancer Robert Skafte, was brutally attacked by a deranged customer at Oak Grove Grocery, a small neighborhood store near downtown Minneapolis.

The assailant, identified as 44-year-old Taylor Justin Schulz, entered the store just before 1 p.m., seemingly normal at first. However, without any apparent provocation, Schulz launched a vicious and unprovoked attack on Skafte. Armed with a golf club, Schulz impaled the innocent store clerk through the torso before fleeing the scene.

What makes this incident even more chilling is that a neighbor, Tony Gutoski, had walked into the store just moments after the attack took place. Gutoski described Skafte as conscious and alert despite the shocking and brutal injuries he had sustained. Skafte revealed to Gutoski that the same customer who had earlier been acting erratically and shouting about something returned and carried out the horrific assault.

Skafte was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. The entire neighborhood was left in shock and grief over the loss of such a well-known and respected individual.

Meanwhile, Schulz had barricaded himself in an apartment across the street from the grocery store. Law enforcement agencies, including the SWAT team, the drone unit, and the bomb squad, were called in to handle the tense situation. Negotiators worked tirelessly for nearly six hours to bring the stand-off to a peaceful resolution.

Eventually, Schulz was apprehended and taken into custody without further incident. He has since been booked in the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause murder charges. The motive behind this horrifying attack is still under investigation, but Gutoski claims that Schulz had previously called 911, demanding to speak to the FBI, suggesting that he may have been mentally unstable.

Skafte, described as a "really good dude" who had never harmed anyone, was not only a dedicated store clerk but also an avid dancer and a well-known figure in the local theater community. The devastating loss of such a beloved member of the neighborhood has left the community in mourning. Outside the grocery store, a memorial has been set up with candles, flowers, and photographs to honor Skafte's memory.

Minneapolis police are continuing their investigation into this horrific incident, hoping to shed light on the motive behind this senseless act of violence. As the community grapples with the loss of one of its own, they are left to reflect on the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day at Oak Grove Grocery.
