Army's goal-line stand secures victory against Navy

00:12 10.12.2023

In a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final seconds, the Army Black Knights emerged victorious over the Navy Midshipmen in the 124th meeting of the nation's oldest service academies. The game took place at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, home of the six-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Despite the Patriots' struggles this season, the matchup of these two patriotic teams injected a sense of excitement and pomp into the stadium.

Wearing gold uniforms as a tribute to the Dogface Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, Army took an early 10-0 lead against a Navy team that struggled to complete passes in the first half. The Army defense was particularly dominant, holding Navy's offense in check and preventing them from completing a single pass before halftime. Army linebacker Kalib Fortner was a standout performer, making a crucial strip sack in the fourth quarter that he then scooped up and ran 44 yards for a touchdown, extending Army's lead to 17-3.

However, Navy quarterback Tai Lavatai, who had replaced the injured Xavier Arline in the second quarter, rallied his team in the final minutes of the game. With the score at 17-9 and under five minutes remaining, Lavatai connected with Jayden Umbarger for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Navy trailing by eight points.

Navy's defense held strong, forcing Army to punt, and giving their offense one final opportunity to tie the game. With no timeouts and about 30 seconds left on the clock, Lavatai led his team down to the Army 6-yard line. In a frantic scramble to line up and run a play before time expired, Lavatai attempted a quarterback sneak, plunging forward as his teammates pushed ahead and behind him. However, the Army defense stood firm, preventing Lavatai from crossing the goal line. The officials whistled the play dead, and a replay confirmed that the ball had never crossed the goal line.

With just 3 seconds remaining and no opportunity to spike the ball on fourth down, Army quarterback Bryson Daily took a shotgun snap, hesitated, and deliberately stepped out of the end zone for an intentional safety. This move killed the remaining time on the clock and secured the victory for Army.

The Black Knights' win not only gave them bragging rights for the second consecutive year, but also clinched the prestigious Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, awarded to the service academy with the best record in head-to-head matchups against other service academies. This victory came on the heels of Army's upset win over then-No. 17 Air Force last month, further solidifying their dominance among the service academies.

The historic significance of this matchup was not lost on the organizers, who planned a weekend of activities at various historic sites in the area. Students from West Point and Annapolis arrived on nearly 100 buses and participated in events such as a pep rally, pull-up competition, and debate at Faneuil Hall. A ceremony commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, and a tug-of-war took place at the Old North Bridge in Concord, where "the shot heard 'round the world" was fired.

The pregame atmosphere was electric, with the Brigade of Midshipmen and the Corps of Cadets marching onto the field in their dress grays and blues. Ultramarathon relay teams ran game balls from their respective campuses, and parachute teams dropped onto the 50-yard line. As a special moment, new recruits were sworn in during a timeout in the third quarter.

Amidst all the excitement, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, a Navy man himself, made an appearance on the pregame show. Sporting a vintage Navy helmet, Belichick gave his prediction for the game. Having grown up in Annapolis while his father worked as a Navy assistant coach, Belichick has deep ties to the academy and addressed the players on Friday night, offering words of encouragement and advice.

In summary, the Army Black Knights emerged victorious in a thrilling and closely contested game against the Navy Midshipmen. The game showcased the resilience and determination of both teams, with Army's defense coming up big in key moments to secure the win. The historic significance of the matchup was complemented by a weekend of activities and celebrations at various historic sites in the area, further highlighting the rich traditions and deep-rooted patriotism of these two service academies.
