Police launch possible hate crime investigations after CCTV catches brutal assault of Jewish woman

04:24 12.12.2023

A disturbing video of a brutal assault on a Jewish woman in north London has gone viral on social media, prompting two arrests and an investigation into whether the attack was a hate crime. The footage, captured by surveillance cameras and publicized by Shomrim, a Jewish neighborhood watch group, shows the victim being pulled to the ground and mercilessly beaten by two teenage girls, aged 13 and 14. The attackers then fled the scene with the woman's handbag, leaving her lying motionless on the street.

The victim, a 20-year-old Orthodox Jewish woman, was targeted because of her appearance, according to police. Detective Sergeant Asli Benson of the London Metropolitan Police expressed concern that the woman was singled out because she was Jewish, especially in the wake of recent terrorist attacks on Israel, which have led to a rise in antisemitic hate crimes in the city. The detective emphasized that the investigation is treating this assault as a possible hate crime.

Although the victim was left bruised and unconscious, her injuries were not severe enough to require hospitalization. Detective Inspector Mike Herrick of the Metropolitan Police assured the public that the victim is receiving support and emphasized the psychological impact of such an offense. Police have confirmed the authenticity of the video released by Shomrim and are actively pursuing all available lines of inquiry, considering it a positive development that two suspects have been arrested.

The disturbing assault has sparked outrage and raised concerns within London's Jewish community. Shomrim's decision to publicize the video on social media has helped bring attention to the incident, but it also serves as a reminder of the need for increased security measures and vigilance in the face of rising hate crimes. Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward, as they continue their efforts to identify the suspects and fully understand the motive behind this shocking incident.
