UNLV gunman resigned as tenured professor after making sexual comment in class, former student says

Former students of the University of Nevada Las Vegas shooter have come forward with unsettling stories about their experiences with him while studying at another college. One student, Kristin Marshburn, revealed that Anthony Polito made a sexual comment about her outfit during a class at East Carolina University in Fall 2016. Marshburn reported the incident to the business school's dean, and Polito never returned to class after the complaint was made. In January 2017, Polito resigned from his tenured associate professor position at ECU. It is unclear if his resignation was directly related to the incident with Marshburn. Marshburn praised ECU for how they handled her complaint and decided to share her story to encourage other women to speak up if they experience mistreatment by someone in a position of power.

Another woman, who chose to remain anonymous, also spoke out about Polito's behavior. She said that he made unwanted contact through emails and texts, bought her gifts, and made her feel preyed upon. She never reported him because he was a well-respected member of the campus community.

A former student of Polito's described him as eccentric but well-liked. He would wear suspenders, fancy cufflinks, and smoke Virginia Slims cigarettes in class. The student, Josh Bryant, enjoyed conversations with Polito but saw him as a narcissist obsessed with being idolized for his intellect.

On his personal website, Polito referred to himself as "Dr. 160IQ" and boasted about being a member of Mensa. However, his membership expired this year after failing to pay his dues. Polito also had financial troubles, as evidenced by an eviction notice on his apartment door.

In December 2020, Polito targeted and killed three faculty members at UNLV, where he had applied for a teaching job but was not hired. It is unclear what his motive for the attack was. Authorities revealed that he had a "target list" containing names of faculty members from both UNLV and ECU.

Overall, these accounts shed light on Polito's disturbing behavior and raise questions about his tenure at ECU and the handling of complaints against him. Marshburn's courage in coming forward serves as a reminder for others to speak out against mistreatment.
