Transgender swimmer, 50, sparks outrage in Canada after competing against teens, sharing locker room

02:59 16.12.2023

A 50-year-old transgender swimmer named Melody Wiseheart has sparked controversy after competing against teenage girls at the Trojan Cup swimming event in Barrie, Ontario. Parents of the young female athletes expressed their concerns about Wiseheart participating in the event and sharing the locker room with their children. In response to the situation, some parents even built a makeshift tent out of towels to shield the young girls in the locker room. An unidentified parent described how the girls were terrified and uncomfortable with the presence of the much older transgender swimmer.

Wiseheart, who previously competed under the name Nicholas Cepeda, is a professor at York University and has been competing against girls since 2019. During the Trojan Cup, she participated in several events, including the women's 1500-meter freestyle for athletes aged 16 and older, where she placed second. Concerned parents reported seeing Wiseheart entering the locker room before the event and at least one parent called the local police. However, the Barrie Police Department confirmed that they did not attend as the matter had resolved itself.

Parents expressed their confusion and frustration over why Wiseheart was allowed to compete against the girls. They felt that it was unfair to the girls who were training for their sport and potentially hoping for scholarships. Some parents questioned the policies and procedures that allowed this to happen and demanded answers. They believed that the situation did not add up and were dissatisfied with the explanations provided by Swimming Canada and Swim Ontario, the organizations that sanctioned the competition.

Both Swimming Canada and Swim Ontario defended Wiseheart's participation, stating that they have robust policies and rules in place to ensure a safe and inclusive competitive experience for all participants. They also emphasized the importance of treating each other with respect and dignity. However, parents remained skeptical and felt that their concerns were not adequately addressed.

It is important to note that World Aquatics, the international governing body of the sport, implemented a policy last year effectively banning male-to-female transgender athletes from competing in women's events. The policy only allows swimmers who transitioned before age 12 or during the early stages of puberty to compete in women's events. The Post reached out to Wiseheart for comment, but she has not responded.

Swimming Canada clarified that changing room policies are determined by facility and municipality policies in accordance with applicable laws. They explained that swim meets are typically conducted in facilities open to the public, and minors often share changing room spaces with adults. They emphasized their obligation to comply with provincial law and municipal policy that aligns with human rights policies on preventing discrimination.

Swim Ontario also investigated a similar concern related to an adult competing against swimmers aged 12-14 during a different meet in October. They concluded that the hosting club acted appropriately according to the policies and procedures outlined by Swimming Canada and Swim Ontario.

The controversy surrounding Melody Wiseheart's participation in the Trojan Cup has raised important questions about the inclusion and fairness of transgender athletes competing in women's events. This incident highlights the need for further discussion and clarification on policies and procedures to ensure that all participants feel safe, respected, and that the competition remains fair.
