Biden's motorcade hit by car, Secret Service ensures safety

03:48 18.12.2023

A car crashed into a parked SUV that was protecting President Biden's motorcade as he was leaving his campaign headquarters in Delaware on Sunday night. The incident occurred as Biden was walking from the campaign office to his armored SUV. A silver sedan with Delaware plates collided with a US Secret Service vehicle that was used to close off the intersection near the headquarters. The sedan, which sustained bumper damage, then attempted to drive into the closed-off intersection before being surrounded by Secret Service agents with weapons drawn. The agents forced the driver to surrender.

Luckily, President Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, were unharmed. Biden was quickly taken into his car, where the first lady was already waiting, and they were driven home without incident. The Secret Service stated that there was no protective interest associated with the incident, indicating that it was not a deliberate act and the driver was likely unaware of Biden's presence.

According to a spokesperson for the Secret Service, a vehicle securing the President's motorcade route was struck by another vehicle at around 8:09 p.m. in Wilmington. The President's motorcade departed without any issues, and there were no injuries reported. Authorities are currently investigating if impairment played a role in the crash.

Prior to the incident, Jill Biden had already entered the vehicle after leaving the campaign offices around 8:07 p.m. President Biden exited the campaign headquarters shortly after and responded to a question from the press before a loud bang startled him. Witnesses reported seeing a surprised expression on Biden's face as he stood outside the vehicle. A man passing by exclaimed, "oh my gosh" when the crash occurred.

Television footage captured the moment Secret Service agents escorted President Biden to his car after the collision. The silver sedan, which had sustained damage to its bumper, was immediately surrounded by security officers upon stopping. The Wilmington Police Department is collaborating with investigators to determine the cause of the collision and whether impairment was a factor.

This incident is not the first involving a motorcade with President Biden. In 2020, when he was President-elect, his motorcade collided with another vehicle in Wilmington, resulting in minor injuries. Additionally, in 2015, an NYPD motorcycle officer on then-Vice President Biden's detail was injured in a crash while escorting Biden to the airport.

Overall, while the car crash caused a momentary disruption, President Biden and the first lady were unharmed and able to return home safely. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
