Princess Diana's Iconic Gowns Fetch Record-breaking Prices at Auction

A dress worn by the late Princess Diana has set a new fashion record after fetching a staggering $1,143,000 at an auction in Hollywood. The black and blue evening dress, designed by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury, was sold at Julien's Auctions. Princess Diana wore the dress for at least two formal public appearances, first during an official royal tour of Italy with Prince Charles in April 1985, and again when she attended a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in May 1986.

The long-sleeve dress features a black velvet bodice with blue metallic stars and a royal blue ballerina skirt with a sash and bow, which was a nod to Diana's love of ballet. The auction company described the design as "sweet and sophisticated," with the silver metallic paint on the velvet adding a sparkle reminiscent of a night's sky.

Sunday's sale broke the previous record for the most expensive dress worn by Diana to be sold at auction. The previous record holder was a velvet gown by Victor Edelstein, which sold for $604,800 in January. The Jacques Azagury dress had been estimated to sell for around $100,000, but it fetched 11 times that price at the auction.

The dress, constructed with fabric chosen by world-renowned textile merchant Jakob Schlaepher, featured metallic embroidered stars carefully threaded by the design team at Jacques Azagury. The ballerina skirt was a tribute to Diana's patronage of the English National Ballet and her love of dance.

In addition to the dress, a pink crepe blouse worn by Diana for her engagement portrait in 1981 was also on sale at the auction. The blouse, which was initially estimated to sell for $80,000, sold for a remarkable $381,000. This blouse, nearly four times its original estimate, showcases the enduring popularity and value of Princess Diana's iconic fashion choices.

The auction also featured a range of other iconic clothing items worn by famous personalities. A Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1963 comedy Charade, a sleeveless gown worn by Gloria Swanson in the 1950 noir film Sunset Boulevard, and Barbra Streisand's sailor dress from a 1960s special called My Name Is Barbra were all sold at the event. However, it was Princess Diana's dress that stole the show, captivating bidders and setting a new record in the fashion world.
