Machine intelligence now has the ability to self-replicate, say scientists

19:03 18.12.2023

In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have announced that artificial intelligence (AI) models can now create smaller AI systems completely on their own, without any human intervention. This project, the first of its kind, was carried out in collaboration between Aizip Inc. and researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and several University of California campuses.

The larger AI models, similar to the ones powering ChatGPT, have the ability to generate more specific AI applications that can be integrated into everyday life. The applications of these specialized models are vast and include improving hearing aids, monitoring oil pipelines, and tracking endangered species. Yan Sun, CEO of Aizip, explained that currently, larger AI models are being used to build the smaller models, comparing it to a bigger brother helping its smaller counterpart. However, this marks the first step towards self-evolving AI, where AI models can build other AI models.

Yubei Chen, one of the researchers involved in the project, echoed Sun's sentiments, stating that they are building the smallest AI models which reside in physical objects or devices. As an example, they demonstrated a human activity tracker that utilizes AI to gather and analyze motion data, which was housed in a chip smaller than a dime. These tiny machine learning capabilities are essential for achieving pervasive AI, where intelligence can be incorporated into nearly any object.

The implications of this discovery are far-reaching, with the study suggesting that home appliances such as coffee machines, ovens, dishwashers, and TVs could all potentially include artificial intelligence in the future. The researchers envision a complete intelligence ecosystem where large and small models collaborate together.

The ability for AI to create new AI models autonomously represents a significant advancement in technology. Chen emphasized that the automation pipeline they have developed is a breakthrough, as it can design an AI model from data generation to deployment and testing without any human intervention. This technology opens up possibilities for various applications, including identifying human voices in noisy environments, proactive monitoring of pipeline data to prevent integrity issues, and analyzing sensor data to track wildlife.

In an interview with Fox News, Sun and Chen discussed the potential of self-evolving AI and the implications of their research. They believe that their discovery is just the first step in showcasing the capabilities of AI models in building other AI models. The full interview can be watched by following the provided link.

This groundbreaking discovery in the field of AI has the potential to revolutionize various industries and pave the way for a future where AI can seamlessly integrate into our everyday lives.
