5 kids home alone die in fire as father is out Christmas shopping, police say

02:37 20.12.2023

A devastating house fire in Bullhead City, Arizona claimed the lives of five children over the weekend. According to the Bullhead City Police Department, the children, ages 2, 4, 5, 11, and 13, were left unsupervised when their father went out to do some holiday shopping. The father reported that he was gone for approximately 2.5 hours, leaving the children alone in the residence.

The fire was reported at 4:54 p.m. on Saturday, and neighbors sprang into action, attempting to rescue those inside before emergency responders arrived. Firefighters were quick to respond and declared the blaze extinguished just nine minutes later, at 5:03 p.m. However, it was already too late for the children inside. The police department stated that the initial investigation revealed that the fire started in the downstairs foyer area, blocking the only staircase and making it impossible for the children to escape.

The victims were identified as four brothers and a cousin who was visiting. The children were not named in the report, and their identities are being withheld until official identification is made by the Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office. The tragic event has deeply impacted the Bullhead City community, situated along the Colorado River near the borders of Nevada and California.

Bullhead City Police Chief Robert Trebes addressed the community in a video, expressing the department's commitment to finding answers and bringing closure to the affected families. Due to the relationship between the victims and a member of the Bullhead City Fire Department, outside agencies, including the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Lake Havasu City Fire Department, have been called in to assist with the investigation.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities emphasized that there were no adults present in the home at the time of the incident. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, with a GoFundMe page set up to assist the grieving parents. The fundraiser has already raised over $7,000 toward its $10,000 goal, with the funds intended to cover funeral expenses and provide support to the family during this difficult time.

Neighbors who witnessed the horrific event recounted their desperate attempts to rescue the children. Some neighbors tried to enter the burning duplex through windows and even used a ladder to reach the upstairs bedroom, but their efforts were in vain. Patrick O'Neal, a neighbor, described the tight-knit nature of the community, where everyone looks out for one another. O'Neal and other neighbors did everything they could to help, pulling items out of the garage and attempting to communicate with the trapped children. Unfortunately, their efforts were met with silence.

The loss of these young lives has shaken the Bullhead City community, but the residents remain grateful for the bravery and compassion displayed by those who tried to rescue the children. The investigation into the cause of the fire continues, as authorities work tirelessly to provide answers and bring closure to the devastated families.
