Senator's son appears in court on new homicide charge from crash that killed North Dakota deputy

In a shocking turn of events, U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer's 42-year-old son, Ian Cramer, is now facing additional charges in connection with the pursuit and crash that resulted in the death of a North Dakota sheriff's deputy earlier this month. The new charges, which include theft, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment, were filed on Tuesday. This comes after Ian Cramer was previously charged with homicide, reckless endangerment, preventing arrest, and drug possession, among other counts, in Mercer County related to the incident that occurred in December.

Ian Cramer, who is currently in jail, is accused of taking a family vehicle and driving through a closed garage door of a Bismarck hospital's ambulance bay. Court documents reveal that Ian's mother, who was initially taking him to the police department to deal with a traffic citation, became concerned about his actions and comments, leading her to take him to an emergency room. It was during this time that Ian allegedly took control of the vehicle and forcefully reversed the Chevrolet Tahoe through the ambulance bay's garage door at high speed.

Authorities state that Ian later fled from deputies who spotted him in Hazen, located approximately 70 miles northwest of Bismarck. Despite a spiked device flattening two of the vehicle's tires, Ian continued to speed at approximately 100 mph (160 kph). More spikes were set up in an attempt to stop him, but he swerved and ultimately crashed head-on into Mercer County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Martin's squad car. The impact launched Deputy Martin approximately 100 feet (30 meters), tragically causing his death.

Kevin Cramer, the father of Ian Cramer and a U.S. Senator, appeared in court on Monday on a new homicide charge in connection with the crash. State District Court Judge Bobbi Weiler decided not to alter the $500,000 cash bond that was previously set for Kevin Cramer. Ian Cramer is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on February 7, during which his attorney will be gathering information for a mental health evaluation.

It is important to note that Kevin Cramer's statement earlier this month shed light on his son's condition, stating that Ian suffers from "serious mental disorders which manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations." This revelation offers a glimpse into the potential underlying factors behind his son's actions.

The shocking incident has left the community grieving the loss of Deputy Paul Martin and grappling with the complexity of mental health issues. As the legal proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how these charges will be addressed and whether Ian Cramer's mental health will play a significant role in the case.
