Probe: Doomed Philadelphia news helicopter hit trees fast, broke up, then burned, killing 2 on board

05:27 23.12.2023

A tragic helicopter crash in the New Jersey Pine Barrens has claimed the lives of a photojournalist and a pilot. The Philadelphia news helicopter, belonging to ABC 6, was returning to its base at Northeast Philadelphia Airport on Tuesday night after covering a Christmas lights assignment at the Jersey Shore. The helicopter, a 2013 American Eurocopter AS-350A-STAR, crashed into the thick woods of Wharton State Forest at a high speed before breaking apart and catching fire.

Investigator Todd Gunther from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided details about the crash during a press conference. He stated that the aircraft hit the trees at a high speed, resulting in fragmentation. Although there was no fire or explosion before the crash, both the main and tail rotors were damaged, indicating that they were still spinning upon impact. Gunther confirmed that the helicopter had power at the time of the crash and its transmission was functioning. There were no distress calls made by the pilot.

The victims of the crash have been identified as 45-year-old photojournalist Christopher Dougherty and 67-year-old pilot Monroe Smith. Both individuals were experienced and had been working with ABC 6 for years. In a statement, the station expressed their devastation and extended their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing. The wreckage, including the nose, tail, and both sides of the helicopter, is being transported to a secure facility where it will be reassembled to aid in the investigation. Gunther mentioned that it may take up to two years for the NTSB to conclude their investigation.

Details about the flight preceding the crash have also emerged. The helicopter had made two previous flights on Tuesday before the fatal crash occurred. The debris field from the crash stretched for 200 yards, which was twice the length initially estimated. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NTSB are working together to determine the cause of the crash.

The Philadelphia community has rallied around the station and the families affected by the tragedy. Viewers have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time. The station expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and thanked the community for their words of comfort.

The helicopter had been leased through US Helicopters Inc., based in North Carolina. The company released a statement expressing their deep sympathy for the families and their willingness to cooperate with investigators to determine the cause of the crash. The pilot and the photographer had been long-time employees of the company.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of the two individuals who dedicated their lives to capturing news stories from above. The findings of the investigation will help provide closure to the families and may lead to improvements in helicopter safety measures.
