Bradley Beal calls out Wizards owner for proposed Virginia move: "Has to stay in D.C.'

08:18 24.12.2023

In a surprising move, the Washington Wizards, the NBA franchise that has called downtown Washington, D.C. home since 1997, announced plans to relocate to Virginia. Wizards owner Ted Leonsis and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin revealed their intention to build a multi-billion sports and entertainment complex in the Potomac Yard area of Alexandria, Virginia, on the other side of the Potomac River. The new complex would house both the Wizards and the Washington Capitals, the city's NHL team. The project, funded through a public-private partnership, is scheduled to break ground in 2025 and is expected to be completed by late 2028.

The announcement has stirred up mixed reactions, with former Wizards star Bradley Beal expressing his disappointment in the relocation plans. In his year-long diary with ESPN's Andscape, Beal made it clear that he does not support the move to Virginia. He emphasized the importance of the team's presence in D.C., referring to the city as Chocolate City and stressing the need for the team to stay for the benefit of the community. Beal also compared the potential relocation to the move of Washington's NFL franchise to Maryland, highlighting the negative impact it had on the fans. He urged Wizards owner Ted Leonsis to work with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to find a solution that would keep the team in the city.

The proposed sports and entertainment complex in Virginia's Potomac Yard area would not only include a new arena for the Wizards and Capitals but also feature a music venue, hotels, and the global corporate headquarters for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the parent company that controls the Wizards, Capitals, and the WNBA's Washington Mystics. The Mystics, who currently play at Entertainment and Sports Arena in southeast Washington, D.C., could potentially move to Capital One Arena once the Wizards and Capitals depart.

Leonsis defended the decision, drawing a parallel with the location of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, rather than Washington, D.C. He emphasized the importance of community and how sports contribute to building legacies and a sense of belonging. However, the proposed move may face challenges at the legislative level, with Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas already opposing the deal.

In response to the Wizards' relocation plans, Washington mayor Muriel Bowser announced her intention to offer $500 million in financing for the renovation and modernization of Capital One Arena. The nonbinding agreement between Monumental Sports & Entertainment and the District of Columbia aims to revitalize the neighborhood and keep both teams in Washington, D.C. The agreement includes a $2 billion mixed-use complex in Alexandria, Virginia, for which the state would contribute transportation improvements and issue $1.4 billion in bonds through a newly created sports and entertainment authority.

Bradley Beal, who played 10 seasons with the Wizards before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in June, made it clear that he sympathizes with the D.C. fans and their potential disappointment with the team's move. He urged the franchise to keep the team in the city, highlighting the importance of the Wizards to the community and drawing parallels to past relocations that left fans disheartened.

As negotiations and discussions continue between the Wizards, Capitals, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, and both Washington, D.C., and Virginia officials, the future of the Wizards' home remains uncertain. The decision will have a significant impact on the team's loyal fanbase and the basketball community in the nation's capital.
