Gunman flees Florida mall after killing 1, injuring 1 in possible targeted attack: police

03:37 26.12.2023

In a shocking incident at the Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida, a deadly shooting occurred on Saturday, targeting shoppers who were busy with their Christmas shopping. The suspect, identified by the Ocala police as Albert J. Shell Jr., is now wanted for first-degree murder and remains on the run. The victim, David Nathaniel Barron, tragically lost his life during the chaos that ensued around 3:40 p.m. Barron, a tattoo artist and father, leaves behind his 17-year-old son, who is devastated by the loss of his father. Cheatara Taylor, the boy's mother, expressed the immense pain her son is going through, as he won't have his father there to celebrate his 18th birthday or witness his graduation next year.

According to witnesses, the horrifying incident unfolded when two individuals began shooting at each other near the mall's Chick-fil-A. Josh Pawchi, who was sheltering inside a Kay Jewelers with his parents, managed to record a video that captured the chaos and fear that gripped the mall. In the video, Pawchi's stepfather can be heard recounting the shooting to someone on the phone, explaining that the two individuals were chasing each other and firing their weapons.

Jennifer Hunt Murty, a local journalist who happened to be volunteering at the mall during the shooting, found herself mere feet away from the gunman. Recalling the horrifying experience, Murty shared her account of the incident, stating that the volunteers at the wrapping station had no protection other than tables covered with linens. When the shooting began, they immediately took cover on the floor, realizing they had very little defense against the violence that was unfolding in front of them.

Terrified shoppers sought refuge wherever they could, with witness videos capturing the panic and frantic attempts to find safety. One video, filmed inside a Bath and Body Works store, shows patrons hiding behind cash registers and eventually fleeing through the backdoor of the store as the shots rang out. The chaos and fear were palpable as customers pushed and shoved each other in their desperate attempts to escape the danger.

The Ocala Police Department has also released surveillance footage of a second man who may have tampered with crucial evidence by taking the shooter's red hat after the incident. Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the unknown man, as the hat may contain valuable DNA evidence. Meanwhile, police have recovered the gun believed to have been used in the shooting after the suspect discarded it while fleeing the scene.

The mall was immediately placed on lockdown for 12 hours as law enforcement officials tirelessly searched for the shooter. Unfortunately, their efforts to apprehend Shell were unsuccessful, prompting the Ocala Police Department to offer a $5,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest. Police believe that the shooting may have been a targeted attack, leaving the public on edge until the suspect is brought to justice.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of David Nathaniel Barron, a beloved father and artist. The shooting has left a lasting impact on those who witnessed the violence unfold and has shattered the sense of security that should accompany a routine trip to the mall.
